How did you use RPL?
I used RPL to gain to the entry to the MALT programme.
Tell us your Recognition of Prior Learning story?
I currently work for the HSE as a dental nurse and as a part time assistant lecturer at ATU on the dental nursing course. I had heard about MALT from colleagues and was very interested in this to further my professional development but thought I hadn’t the formal qualification to gain entry to the course.
My motives in undertaking the MALT were both professional and personal as I wanted to expand my knowledge of teaching and learning to support my students in the best way possible.
I heard about RPL from colleagues in ATU and decided to explore the RPL process further.
I contacted the RPL officer in ATU Letterkenny, she played a crucial role in assisting me throughout the RPL process, by providing me with all the information and advice required and was available to guide and support me throughout the RPL process.
Why was RPL the right fit for you?
RPL acknowledged the value of real-world experience and gave formal recognition to the skills and knowledge I have acquired in my career to date. This formal validation and recognition of my skills gave me confidence in my abilities and qualifications.
How has RPL and higher education impacted you?
As I look back at the last 12 months, I can see how RPL and higher education have contributed to my professional growth by providing me with opportunities to develop new skills and expand my knowledge base. ATU provides the highest quality education with passionate, dedicated and supportive lecturers. One year into MALT now, I have gained a wealth of information, for example a deep understanding of educational theories and best practices in teaching and learning, which has helped with my job teaching on the dental nursing course.
How would you describe your experience of the RPL application process?
Overall, the RPL application process was a very positive experience. I met with the RPL officer to discuss the requirements. The application process understandably required a lot of information and documentation, therefore the applicant has to spend some time completing the portfolio. However, the RPL officer was very approachable, knowledgeable, efficient, and was there to support me at all times throughout the process.
What advice would you offer someone looking into RPL in higher education?
If you're considering RPL and higher education, don’t hesitate, contact the RPL officer.
Acknowledge your accomplishments to date, be confident in yourself and enjoy your educational journey.
