Master of Arts in Teaching and Learning

How did you use RPL?

For entry to a program.

Minimum entry requirements for the MALT program is a L8 in a teaching or learning discipline. Although I am in my 7th year of teaching apprentice motor mechanics, my previous highest qualification before RPL was a L6 - Train the Trainer.

Tell us your Recognition of Prior Learning story?

I am writing to share my positive experience with the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process at ATU Galway, specifically for my entry into the Masters of Arts in Teaching & Learning (MALT) program.

Before venturing into teaching in Further and higher education, I started my career as a motor mechanic apprentice. My keen interest in the motor trade led to completing a degree in Automotive Technology & Diagnostics in DIT Bolton St and later into a teaching position on the motor apprenticeship course in ATU Galway. Over the years, I realized the importance of enhancing my teaching methods to benefit my students. Despite having a degree and considerable experience in my specific field, I felt the need to become a more knowledgeable & rounded learning facilitator. The MALT program seemed like the perfect opportunity to enhance my skills in this area.

Discovering the MALT course through the ATU Continuous Professional Development information channels was a pivotal moment. Having the desire to pursue this program, I learned about the RPL option as a pathway for entry. The MALT course coordinator and RPL coordinator at ATU Donegal played crucial roles in guiding me through the RPL process. They provided invaluable assistance in assembling my RPL portfolio, offering insightful tips that contributed to the success of my application.

Why was RPL the right fit for you?

Opting for RPL was the right fit for me because, as a lecturer with five years teaching experience, I aimed to improve both my teaching methodologies and my students' learning experiences. The RPL process was seamless, thanks to the support and guidance from the dedicated RPL coordinators. Although it took some time to compile my portfolio, the assistance received made the process much more manageable.

How has RPL and higher education impacted you?

Enrolling in the MALT program through RPL has already proven to be a transformative experience. I feel the immediate benefits, becoming a more effective teacher and opening numerous avenues for career progression within my field. Sharing ideas and practices with my lecturers and other participants on the MALT course has helped me to improve my teaching and to connect more effectively with our motor apprentices, to give them a more beneficial learning experience.

How would you describe your experience of the RPL application process?

Very good. I found the RPL coordinators very helpful and although it took some time to put my portfolio application together the process was made much easier due to the support supplied by the RPL team in ATU.

What advice would you offer someone looking into RPL in higher education?

For anyone considering RPL in higher education, I would strongly encourage them to take that chance to connect with an RPL coordinator. The support and guidance provided throughout the process can make a significant difference in achieving success.
