BSc (Hons) in Software Development
Tell us a little bit about yourself and what led you to choosing Software Development in ATU Sligo?
I started my Computing studies at ATU Sligo and quickly found a passion for programming. The first year, covering diverse subjects such as networking, programming, user experience, and general computing, was crucial in exploring various aspects of the field. This experience helped me identify my true interests, and by the beginning of Year 2, I was certain about specialising in Software Development.
What specifically about the degree do you particularly enjoy?
I enjoy the small class sizes, which allow for close interaction with lecturers and classmates. The hands-on approach makes learning engaging, and the numerous projects we complete are invaluable for building a strong professional portfolio.
What is the best thing about Software Development that you think new applicants should know?
In Year 3, there is a paid work placement where the project supervisor helps you find the ideal company, either in Ireland or another European country. Most of my friends secured their placements early, and we received job offers afterwards.
What are your favourite modules on the degree?
I particularly enjoy the programming modules, including Programming 1 and 2, OOP, and Web Development with OpenStack. Building full-stack applications is especially rewarding. I also enjoyed Cloud Development, where we created cloud architecture using AWS. It was fascinating to see how it all comes together.
If you were speaking with a first year, student about to start Software Development, what advice would you give them?
Complete all your lab exercises—practice is key to mastering programming. Share your projects on GitHub to track your progress and take pride in your work. Manage your time effectively to stay on top of assessments and exams. Build friendships, share your knowledge, and help others—teaching is a valuable skill. Continue learning over the summer and consider earning extra certifications.
Build a strong LinkedIn profile from day one, it can help you secure job opportunities even in your first year, as it did for me.
What are your plans after ATU Sligo and any long term goals you are aiming for?
I have secured a position with Dell Technologies as a Software Engineer. Once I finish Year 4 of my degree in June 2024 I will start this new job in Dublin.
