Course Overview
Agriculture, food production and environmental management are just a few of Ireland’s key industries, and gaining a degree in this area opens up a host of career options. This programme will enable the learner to improve their general business knowledge and understanding and develop business skills, particularly as they apply to the rural enterprise and agri-business sector.
The aim of the BB (Hons) in Agri-Business Management is to provide the learner with a business education that emphasises the importance of rural enterprise and agri-business by developing an understanding of the theory, concepts and methods as well as the practical implementation of a range of skills and tools in these areas.
Graduates will be well prepared to operate in a variety of managerial and administrative positions in rural and agri-enterprises or to become self-employed. Graduates can progress to a variety of work in agri-business and agricultural services, for example, in marketing, information processing, administration and management posts, and various employment opportunities in rural development.
This programme meets the educational requirements for ‘Trained Farmer’ status for the purpose of farm inheritance, grant aids and tax exemptions.

Computer ApplicationsThe aim of this course is to provide the students with the skills to produce Word documents which incorporate text, graphics and appropriate formatting in a business context, and to use formulae, common functions, formatting, sorting, and charts in Excel to produce spreadsheets applicable to the business environment. Practical hands on application of Excel, Word and PowerPoint, these are skills that are applicable to any working environment by enhancing productivity, enable communication, facilitate data management and support a wide range of personal, educational and business activities. The collaborative nature of the skills attained demonstrate the adherence to sustainable development. Learning Outcomes 1. Demonstrate the ability to use MS Word, MS Excel and MS PowerPoint in a way that is aligned to how the software is applied in the business environment. 2. Introduction to ChemistryThis module provides an introduction to chemistry. The arrangement of elements in the Periodic Table of Elements and the naming system for simple compounds and ions is explained. The concept of the mole is introduced and applied to chemical reactions and to the concentration of solutions. The theory of acids and bases is introduced, as well as the concept of titrations. The structure and naming system for simple organic functional groups is outlined. Practical skills relevant to the practise of chemistry are developed in the laboratory. Learning Outcomes 1. Explain the conceptof atoms, molecules, ions and moles. 2. Demonstrate an understanding of chemical reactions, chemical formulas, chemical equations, concentrations of solutions and appropriate units. 3. Organic AgricultureThis module provides students with the knowledge and skills to apply organic farming principles to production, meet market requirements, and apply organic standards in compliance with EU and Irish legislation. Animal and Plant Science: Field and LabThe module explores a wide range of terrestrial ecosystems and the inhabitant communities of plants and animals. This module focuses on building an understanding of ecosystem diversity with the appraisal of: wetlands, woodlands, peatlands, grasslands, field and riparian margins. The structure and function of each ecosystem will be examined at a micro level as botanical keys are used to identify woody and herbaceous species. Farmland animal and bird populations will also be studied to highlight the interaction and relationship dynamics within each ecosystem. Learning Outcomes 1. Rural Development and Agricultural PolicyThe social and economic development of rural Ireland is integral to the wellbeing of our country as a whole and to our quality of life. Ireland's economy, heritage and culture is heavily dependent on the contribution of rural areas. Rural areas hold much of Ireland's natural resources, biodiversity and visitor attractions, and rural communities are important guardians of our heritage, culture and natural capital. The Rural Development and Agricultural Policy Module covers some of the challenges which many rural areas in Ireland contend with an older demographic profile, a relatively narrow enterprise base, the implications of climate change for traditional industries such as farming, a high property vacancy rate in towns and villages, and a greater vulnerability to the effects of economic downturn. The module looks at how nationally and internationally rural development is integrally linked to policies across a wide range of areas including spatial planning, enterprise growth, job creation, social cohesion, community development, public services, communications infrastructure, agriculture, the marine, climate adaptation, tourism, heritage, health and leisure. Advanced Farm Planning and ManagementThe focus of the module is on providing students with a working knowledge of techniques and principles to enable them to make good financial decisions, resulting in increased farm income and improved long-term viability. Climate Change Adaptation and MitigationThis module introduces the physical science of climate change including its drivers and impacts. Central to this is an understanding of carbon cycling and greenhouse gas fluxes, with a focus on the land system. The expected risks of climate change to natural and managed ecosystems are explored including the key concept of risk related to the level of global warming. Building on these core concepts climate change adaptation and mitigation are investigated at a global and national level with specific focus on agriculture. Finally, practices by which the land system in Ireland can contribute to climate actions are evaluated. Advanced Grassland ManagementThe purpose of this module is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competencies necessary to better manage grasslands and to give a broad overview of intensive and extensive grassland systems. Learning Outcomes 1. Identify the optimum growing conditions for grass and grass clover swards. 2. Discuss the reseeding, establishment and weed control requirements for grass, grass/clover and multi species swards. 3. New Venture PlanningThe module introduces Learners to the business planning process and they learn to plan a project around key milestones and concepts, including the essential skill of raising finance and gathering talent.The different options of how to protect Intellectual Property are explored. The module teaches the Learner the key skills and principles required to fund a start-up and manage and support a new venture. Learners will be broken into individuals or teams and will be asked to research and present and defend a detailed Business Plan for a proposed new venture idea. Marketing is at the core of any agricultural or food production business. It is an organisational philosophy and a set of guiding principles for interacting with customers, competitors, and the environment. Agrimarketing is reponsible for creating and delivering customer value to the benefit of the organisation and its stakeholders. It involves identifying and measuring consumers' needs and wants and then developing agrimarketing strategy and implementation programmes for offerings that satisfy customers' needs better than the competition. Soil Science and Nutrient ManagementThis module provides the student with a detailed understanding of soil classification and information systems, as well as the physical, biological and chemical processes that occur within soils. This includes understanding the impact soil type and soil physical characteristics have on soil fertility, nutrient cycling, carbon, and water storage. Building on this knowledge students will appraise different land management options appropriate to different soil types. Practical skills attained will include the ability to identify and manage different soil types, analyse, and interpret key soil physical, chemical and biological properties, and devise appropriate nutrient management plans. Learning Outcomes 1. Articulate an in-depth knowledgeof soil classification and identification methods including the use of soil information systems 2. Measure and critically interpret key soil physical, chemical, and biological characterises 3. Compare and contrast different soil types and the appropriate sustainable agricultural management of them 4. Research MethodsThis module introduces the student to different research methods, approaches and philosophies. In addition, students develop the skills to identify a research question and critically review academic and/or professional literature to address that question. This is useful to graduates as it reinforces how research influences management practice and vice versa, and students develop a high level of research skill that will be useful in their career. Learning Outcomes 1. Know a variety of research methods, approaches and philosophies 2. Deploy research skills (information retrieval; the ability to gather, sift, and organise material independently and critically, and evaluate its significance;drafting, rewriting and editing) 3. Integrated Enterprise SystemsThis module will give students insight into how integrated enterprise systems can transform an organisation in terms of creating agility in its process and people to compete in dynamic environments. Supply Chain ManagementThe aim of this module is to provide students with a professional understanding of Supply Chain Management (SCM), associated activities, processes, standards and the practical application of key frameworks and concepts in international settings. For the online version of this Module (Entrepreneurship year 4 programme), it will consist of two lectures and a 1 hour tutorial. The lectures will be asynchronous and will be uploaded to Learnonline for the learners to watch, the flipped classroom approach will also be used in order for the learners to prepare for their asynchronous lectures and to provide material/videos/case studies as appropriate. The tutorials will be delivered synchronously on a weekly basis, to give an opportunity for the learners to ask any questions, work out examples, and to meet the students in an online environment to provide interaction and engagement for all concerned. The assessment strategy will remain the same as the Face to Face version of this module. Learning Outcomes 1. Develop a thorough understanding of the role of SCM, SC structures, SC flows and associated standards for a range of business types both within and across SC chains and networks. 2. Evaluate the role of Logistics management in optimising the movement and storage of goods throughout SCs 3. Evaluate the influence of drivers for change, in particular on advances in technology and the transformational influence of technology on contemporary SCM. 4. Analyse and develop SCM strategies that are optimised for different environments, relationship management and approaches to quality assurance 5. Formulate, apply and evaluate the use of SCM frameworks and concepts to realistic international cases and scenarios. |

Animal Nutrition & BreedingThis module advances learners' knowledge of the principles of animal nutrition and breeding. It will equip learners with the relevant knowledge, skill and competence to critique and formulate feeding regimes for farm animals in accordance with their nutritional requirements. Learners will also develop the knowledge, skill and competence to adopt and implement best practices in applied livestock breeding management and reporting. Learning Outcomes 1. ProjectDeveloping the capacity to devise and complete a sustained piece of secondary research and independent writing is one of the defining features of a graduate of the Business Studies (Hons) programme. Students will complete a literature review on a topic of their own choosing under the supervision of an assigned staff member. There are no timetabled hours and the module is coordinated by one staff member. Learning Outcomes 1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of contemporary issues and critical concepts relating to the chosen research topic. 2. Deploy bibliographic skills, including citation of sources and consistent use of conventions in the presentation of scholarly work. |

Strategic ManagementThe purpose of this module is to introduce students to the theoretical principles of Strategic Management. The module will introduce students to the role strategy and strategising can play in achieving competitive advantage. Students will be introduced to the various tools and models to assess the external and internal environment and the strategic choices a company has at the strategic business unit level. The module will evaluate the additional strategic options or supplementary strategies open to a company in implementing its chosen strategic option. Finally, the attention of the student is directed towards the key components of strategy implementation. Having covered the theoretical base the focus of the module then shifts towards the application of the theory in the second semester through case studies of various companies and industries, business news stories and issues in the business environment. In semester 1 students will attend two lectures and a one-hour seminar. In semester 2 where the focus of the module is on the application of theory students are required to attend one lecture and a two-hour seminar to develop relevant skills and competencies. Learning Outcomes 1. Assess the importance of strategy in a business context. |

Graduates can progress to a variety of work in agri-business and agricultural services, for example, in marketing, information processing, administration and management posts; as well as various employment opportunities in rural development.
