Course Overview
Our Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Intellectual Disability Nursing is dedicated to ensuring you have the necessary training and knowledge to work with adults and children who have an intellectual disability. It’s a rewarding and fulfilling course that will set you on the path to a rewarding and fulfilling career.Intellectual Disability Nursing empowers people with intellectual disabilities who may be unable to live fully independent lives. Your role as a qualified nurse will guide and support your patients towards maintaining optimum health and wellbeing, and crucially, social inclusion in their day-to-day lives. Your work is vital and important in society, working closely with each individual and their specific needs, as well as their families and other carers in your team. Practice placement of up to 39 hours a week forms an integral part of your training. After qualifying you’ll be able to pursue your career in clinical nursing, nurse management or education, with your training also a foundation to enable you to pursue other areas of nursing – from oncology to orthopaedics. Non-Eu candidates will not be considered for this course unless/until there are still vacant places available after all eligible EU candidates have been considered.

Introduction to Behaviour Sciences & ScholarshipThis module will introduce students to insights offered by the social sciences of psychology and sociology into understanding human behaviour to develop an understanding of holistic factors relevant to health and health care. A key focus of this module is to facilitate the development of students' understanding of the requirements and expectations of academic study in higher education. Classes are supplemented by tutorials to set content in the context of nursing care and practice. A flipped classroom approach may be used to enhance student learning where appropriate. Psychology & Sociology Across the LifespanThis module builds on learners' understanding of biological, psychological and social factors that influence health through the life course. Application of evidence based psychological and sociological approaches to nursing and health care are embedded in the module with the ethos of person-centred care and inclusivity in services. Health Needs and Nursing Interventions 1This module is designed to enable the learner to acquire the principles, knowledge and skills necessary to care for people with an intellectual disability who present with disorders of the nervous and musculoskeletal system. It will also provide the learner with an in-depth understanding of autistic spectrum and the management of a person on the spectrum. Learning Outcomes 1. Intellectual Disability Nursing Practice – InternshipThis module aims to promote consolidation of the learners’ theoretical knowledge and clinical competency in preparation for successful transition for eligibility to register as a qualified nurse. The module also aims to facilitate ongoing development of knowledge, values, meaning and experiences at proficient level; to integrate skills of analysis, theoretical knowledge, problem-solving, clinical decision-making, and reflexivity into everyday clinical nursing practice.
