Course Overview
ATU Sligo, has been delivering full time degree courses in Occupational Safety and Health for over 20 years and are leading providers of online education programmes. This add-on level 8 in Occupational Safety and Health Management is specifically designed for those health and safety professionals who wish to obtain a relevant level 8 honours degree. Organisations are demanding health and safety risk management are integral components of good organisational management.
This degree is specifically designed for those who want to take up a management role in occupational safety and health. In recognition of the broader remit of the role of the health and safety professional in the workplace, modules on environment, business, training and project management are covered in this course. Our lecturers are experts in their fields and have vast experience delivering both traditional and online education.
This course is offered part-time over two years through online lectures and resource materials which are available 24/7 to the learner. There will be one workshop per semester where the students will undertake teamwork, case studies, lectures and/or site visits. Assessments will be a blend of online and final examinations and students will be instructed in these online methods at the start of the course. Typically lectures occur on line one evening per week for approximately one or two hours depending on credit allocation. There are opportunities to ask questions and interact similar to a real classroom experience or alternatively the live recordings can be accessed for repeat viewing at any time. Participants require a broadband service to access the material and participate on the course.

Regulatory Affairs (ODL)The aim of this module is to systematically explore the role of Regulatory Affairs in business management, covering Safe Product Design, Medical Device Directive, FDA regulations, GMP & CAPA, Machinery Directive & Food Safety Management Systems. Learning Outcomes 1. Examinethe role of Regulatory Affairs in relevant industriesfrom a product design, approval, process, liability and risk management perspective. 2. Recognise and apply the concepts of Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP), Corrective and preventive action (CAPA) as applied to a regulatedenvironment. 3. Examine product safety and regulatory requirements and develop a product liability prevention programme. 4. Analysethe requirements of the EU machinery directive, apply them to a machinery manufacturer andcarry outrelevant risk assessments. 5. Interpret and appraise Food Safety Standards in a manufacturing environment. |

ErgonomicsThis module examines the role of ergonomics in occupational loss control from the human factors perspective including the individual, the task and the organisation. Learning Outcomes 1. Evaluate and propose ergonomic interventions to manage OSH risks. |

Behavioural Based Safety ProgramsThe aims of this module are to consider and evaluate behavioural based safety approaches in the workplace and to consider best practice in the development, delivery of these programs. Having completed this module students should be able to: understand key concepts and theories relating to behavioural and belief based safety approaches; recognise behavioural based approaches and their application to the workplace; examine best practice; and evaluate behavioural based safety programs. Occupational Safety and Health Project ManagementThis module will look at the need for effective project management in occupational safety and health. The role of the leader along with the development of personal and professional skills will be explored to assist the practitioner of occupational safety and health in a professional environment. Learning Outcomes 1. Appraise current and historical management theories and their relevance to the modern workplace 2. Analyse the stages in effective project management with particular reference to occupational safety and health activities 3. Explore the roles adopted by team members in a functional project management group and reflect on ones own skills and attributes in the context of project management 4. Manual Handling Instruct TrainingThe aim of this module is to provide students with the knowledge, skill and competence to effectively identify manual handling training requirements and deliver manual handling training. This module is the equivalent of the QQI Special Purpose Award Instructing Manual Handling 6N0233. Learning Outcomes 1. Have a basic knowledge of the legislation in relation to manual handling in the workplace. 2. Recognise and describe risk factors associated with manual handling activity and workplace conditions and the development of musculoskeletal disorders, particularly to the back. 3. Describe and demonstrate safe handling practice and workplace organisation to reduce risk of the development of musculoskeletal disorders. 4. Design and communicate instruction for safe handling practice and its importance in the workplace. 5. Performmanual handling risk assessments. 6. Workstation Assessor TrainingThe aim of this module is to provide students with the knowledge and skills to conduct ergonomic hazard identification and risk assessment of workplace workstations and examine suitable organisational and operational controls. Learning Outcomes 1. Have a basic knowledge of current health & safety legislation in relation to workplace workstations. 2. Identify ergonomic risk factors, hazards and risks of workplace workstations and explain their association with musculoskeletal disorders. 3. Complete an ergonomic workstation risk assessment. 4. Identify practical solutions to reduce workers risk of developing musculoskeletal disorders. 5. Communicate the findings from ergonomic risk assessment and offer recommendations of basic principles for securing safety and health in the workplace. 6. Management of Workplace Health and Wellbeing (ODL)This module will focus on the management principles and systems that impact on workers physical and mental health and wellbeing. During this module, students will gain a detailed knowledge and understanding of health and wellbeing management in a workplace setting. The learner will be able to identify and outline the core skills required to plan, implement and evaluate health promotion initiatives from a theoretical perspective. Learning Outcomes 1. Assess and manage health issues arising from exposure to physical, chemical, psychological and ergonomic hazards within the workplace. 2. Analyse and apply relevant legislative requirements in relation to the management of workplacehealth and wellbeing. 3. Design and implement appropriate workplacehealth and wellbeing management techniques to reduce riskwithin the organisation. 4. Compare and contrast the health and safety risks associated with different groups in the workplace setting, in particular; aging workers, young workers, female workers, migrant workers and shiftworkers. 5. Design and implement effective risk communication and training programmes for workplace health and wellbeing. |

EHS Management Systems and AuditingThe aim of this module is to address the increasing requirement for OHS professionals to integrate occupational safety, health and environmental management in the workplace. The specific requirements of ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 will be detailed from initial status review to policy, planning, implementation, monitoring, auditing and review. Learning Outcomes 1. Examine the elements of the ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 management systems. 2. Assess the synergy between OSH and environmental management and the various stakeholders involved. 3. Integrate a knowledge of health and safety and environmental issues into EHS management. 4. Develop the outputs to meet the compliance requirements of clauses of ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 in a work based scenario using a project management approach. 5. Demonstrate a knowledge of best practice in auditing. |

Work-Based ProjectStudents are required to complete a work-based project as part fulfilment of this Programme. Learning Outcomes 1. Identify, conceptualise, formulate and communicate a proposal for a work-based project on an occupational safety and health topic. 2. Prepare and maintain a programme of work throughout the lifecycle of the project. 3. Identify the objectives of the project and formulate an appropriate methodology to achieve the objectives. 4. Implement and evaluate the effectiveness ofthe methodology in an appropriate manner. 5. Manage a personal learning process, demonstrate monitoring procedures throughout the development of the project and recognise the resource requirements of the project. |

Graduates can progress onto our MSc in Environmental Health and Safety Management (Online) – Institute of Technology Sligo (itsligo.ie) or onto a Level 10 PhD with a H2.2 or above.

Entry Requirements
Participants must hold an Ordinary Degree (Level 7) in Health and Safety or a relevant discipline with experience. It is envisaged that applicants with other qualifications and with relevant OSH experience will also be considered for entry. This will be subject to assessment of other recognised qualifications, and/or recognised prior learning and/or relevant work experience. These candidates will be interviewed for suitability and be subject to prior approval by the Programme Board.Participants must hold 60 ECTS credits at Ordinary Degree Level 7.
Careers
Graduates will be qualified at Occupational Safety and Health Advisor/Manager level. Employment prospects exist in both the public and private sectors in organisations of all types and sizes.
