Course Overview
This Certificate is designed to equip automotive technicians working in the automotive sector with knowledge and of Electric Vehicle Technologies and Functionality.
Modules such as Electric Vehicle Low Voltage and High Voltage Systems, and Internal Combustion Engine Diagnostics to allow technicians to better understand how to interface with ICT systems and the software that is becoming more prevalent in the automotive arena. Another module in Business affords the learner an appreciation of how to analyse business expenses and accurately determine how to make maintenance and repair of these new types of vehicle profitable.
The UK government has planned to phase out new petrol and diesel car sales by 2030 and the Irish government has set a target to have 936,000 of the cars registered in Ireland electrified by 2030. Ireland is however somewhat behind in offering much needed training to technicians working in this area, and damage to business’ will ensue if this remains unaddressed.

Communications for InvestmentsThe purpose of this module is to provide the learner with the ability to create written documentation and perform data collection, data analysis, data presentation tasks using Microsoft Office Tools such as Word and Excel. Application of such tools is tailored towards costings associated with the automotive repair sector. Electric Vehicle High Voltage and Low Voltage SystemsThe purpose of this module is to enhance the learners understanding of Electric Vehicle High Voltage and Low Voltage Systems. Internal Combustion Engine DiagnosticsThe purpose of this syllabus is to enhance the learners understanding of the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) operation. Diagnostics modules address important skills gaps around diagnosis of vehicle faults relating specifically to the EV and ICE systems and sensors. Modern vehicles have sophisticated interlinked communication networks allowing sometimes up to 100 separate control modules to communicate and share information. Modern vehicle electrical circuit power supplies and wiring can also be shared across sensors and control modules of different vehicle systems. It is therefore common for a fault to arise which would affect the operation of the ICE system, despite the fault falling within a system outside of the ICE control module. The objective of this module is therefore to equip the learner with the ability to confidently operate a diagnostic interface, conduct diagnostics outside of said system and subsequently diagnose simple faults in electronic control systems. Practical laboratories and exam based test are conducted e.g. in module Vehicle Control Systems and Diagnostics, the exam will consist of diagnosing simulated faults and coding a component or module.

The course will be available to applicants who meet the following criteria:
Current level 3 in motor vehicle and industry experience
Work Placement
The work placement modules are an integral part of the course. The aim of the placement is to provide learners with an opportunity to gain skills, experience and competence. Please note that with while the university will make every effort to assist the learner in finding a placement final responsibility for securing the placement resides with the learner. Travel and accommodation are the responsibility of the learner.

Graduate careers typically include roles such as Diagnostic Technician, Fleet Manager, Maintenance Specialist, MOT and NCT Inspector, and Repair Technician.

Who Should Apply?
This course offering is one of educating those who already hold a skillset in the automotive/electric industry. The prospective candidate will typically already be in the automotive repair sector or a Level 4 motor mechanic from the UK with a qualification which is limited to the internal combustion engine powertrain. The additional skillset that this course will impart on these learners will therefore enable them to:
Gain employment/upskill them in the new evolving electric vehicle area
Cater for this new market in their existing employment position and subsequently survive
Command greater financial reward by offering this skillset to a new employer
Set up their own bespoke service centre to cater for this new technology
Progress to further higher level programmes of study in this area
