Course Overview
This programme is designed to equip supervisors/managers in the tourism sector or those seeking to work in this area with key skills and competencies to effectively manage human resources.
The specialist modules that are included will enable the participants to expand their knowledge and develop their skills and behaviours to become competent in the management of people in these challenging environments.
On completion of the programme, learners can expect to work in a position of responsibility in the tourism sector in a supervisory, management or human resource role.

Essentials for People ManagementThis module will introduce learners to the theory and application of human resource management in tourism enterprises. This module will examine relevant employment legislation throughout the process. Learners will identify and apply practical application of theories to the efficient management of the recruitment, selection, reward and performance elements of people management. The key challenges involved in the efficient management of people in organisations are explored. Learning Outcomes 1. Evaluate the functions of essentials for people management and critique their implications for the people resourcing and development process. |

Leadership & Organisational DevelopmentThis module examines traditional and contemporary theories of leadership and explores the significant role of the leader in organisational development. Learners are introduced to the evolving field of organisational development. Sustainable effective organisational performance requires the constituent parts of the organisation to align with the goals of the organisation. This module analyses the structural, cultural and human factors within an organisation and how they relate to each other. The leadership challenge of improving implementing and managing the change process is examined. Learning Outcomes 1. Assess and critically analyse the theories and concepts of leadership. |

Talent & Business Strategy DevelopmentThe aim of this module is to introduce the learner to the theory and application of talent management techniques and how to identify, develop, engage, retain and deploy individuals who are considered particularly valuable to a tourism enterprise. The learner will gain an understanding of strategies that focus on positive psychology, inclusiveness and the establishment of talent-centred cultures and how these strategies should align with business goals and strategic objectives. Learning Outcomes 1. Critically evaluate the different approaches to defining, developing and retaining talent on an individual and team level. |

Coaching and MentoringThe aim of this module is to familiarise the learners with the concepts and principles of coaching and mentoring techniques by introducing them to recognized models and practices. In addition, this module will build on the learner’s competence by developing their coaching and mentoring knowledge, skills and abilities. Learning Outcomes 1. Contrast coaching and mentoring and develop an understanding of the role and responsibilities of effective coaches and mentors in the workplace. |

Conflict & Persuasive Negotiations SkillsThis module will introduce the learner to the theory, processes, and practices of negotiation, conflict resolution, and relationship management to help to become a more effective negotiator in a variety of situations. A practical grounding of the management of employment relations in tourism enterprises will also be explored. A critical review of dispute resolution procedures and the principles of negotiatio settlements will be examined. The learners will explore the different types of conflict and how to master the concepts, skills, and practices of effective business communications and negotiations. Learning Outcomes 1. Appraise the factors that impact on stable employee relations and the mechanisms that exist to facilitate positive employee relations. |

Work Based LearningThe focus of this module is on the application of learning to real work issues. Work based learning involves reflection on practice and learning from the experience. This module provides an opportunity for the learner to relate academic theory to the workplace, it introduces the learner to the concepts of learning for and from their work organisation. The learner will identify an issue within their work organisation that merits investigation and draw upon a wide range of specialised or conceptual information in order to formulate an appropriate response to that issue. This module requires the learner to complete a reflective learning portfolio using techniques and tools such as critical incidence analysis and reflective logs. Learning Outcomes 1. Work independently on a research project. |

Entry Requirements
Leaving Certificate 5 O6/H7 in the Leaving Certificate, to include Mathematics (F2/O6/H7) and either Irish or English (O6/H7), OR QQI FET Level 5, OR equivalent qualification.
Candidates who do not meet the above entry requirements may be admitted to the programme on the grounds of mature years (over 23 by 1st January in the proposed year of entry) If they are deemed to have attained appropriate education and experience.
