Course Overview

This programme is an general entry science degree that gives students an exceptional level of flexibility. The programme builds a core foundation in key science disciplines in Year 1. This is a good choice for students who know they want to study science but are unsure about their key area at the time of application. Students are given advice during the year to help guide their decisions. Students also get to choose from elective science subjects in Year 1 before selecting a specialised honours degree at the end of that year.

Overview

Our science programmes are hands-on, with a big emphasis on developing practical skills. This means our students graduate with the skills employers want. Students spend 50% of their time in labs and have access to state-of-the-art, industry-spec equipment throughout our labs.

Leaving Certificate science subjects are not an entry requirement for this programme. The first year of study will cover all key science disciplines from the start. Small class sizes ensure students always have their own lab space and are fully supported by our expert academic staff throughout their learning. We also focus on soft skills such as teamwork and communication. These skills are highly valued by potential employers.

ATU Sligo has one of the largest science schools in Ireland. We offer an excellent learning environment in our state-of-the-art science building with field trips, site visits and interactive modules. This degree also encourages critical thinking skills in students. This aspect of education ensures ongoing professional career and lifelong learning development.

Year 1

The subjects studied in Year 1 include core science modules in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Information Technology and Learning to Learn. Students also select from a range of elective modules to help discover the various options available to them.

Year 2

Students select which pathway they would like to take. Students follow one of four designated honours degree pathways below.

1	Physics 1 This is an introductory Physics course relevant to all fields of Science. The principal topics include mechanics, materials and heat and consist of lab investigations in these areas. 1	Biology 1 The module aims to introduce learners to the structure and function of the major biological macromolecules of the cell. The module also introduces learners to the structure and functions of eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells. Learning Outcomes 1. 1	Mathematics for Science 1 In this module, the fundamentals of mathematics required for a Science qualification are covered. All effort in this semester is focused on the student's need to understand and practice basic mathematical processes and their application to real life and science. Students are supported in their efforts by a comprehensive VLE site containing videos, notes and quizzes relevant to each topic. There are supervised tutorials twice a week to help solve the problems encountered in the module. Learning Outcomes 1. Perform calculations involving basic operations without a calculator. 2. Use powers and scientific notationto express values and evaluate expressions. 3. Perform unit conversions and simple pharmaceutical calculations 4. 1	Information Technology 1 This module deals with the practical applications of Information Technology. It serves as an introduction to the computer systems the student will use while taking their chosen course in the college. It also covers the fundamental skills of word processing, presentation and spreadsheet software. The teaching methods used will be a combination of lectures, self-study, labs, tutorials, problem-solving exercises and computer-based learning. Learning Outcomes 1. Use the IT infrastructureand Virtual Learning Environment to perform standard IT tasks to assist in their future studies 2. Identify the main component parts and peripheral devices of a standard computer system. 3. Create documentation using Word processing software incorporating a range of data management and editing techniques. 4. Produce a professional presentation using presentation software 5. 1	Learning to Learn The module aims to provide students with fundamental skills with respect to communicating scientific information during their academic studies and in the workplace. The importance of the effective communication of scientific information by written, oral and visual means will be emphasised. Students will be required to source, review and summarise peer reviewed scientific literature. The preparation of scientific reports will encompass the organisation, interpretation and presentation (written) of scientific data in structured format. Students will be required to work as a team in order to conduct research on a topical issue for an oral and poster presentation. The role and importance of teamwork will be discussed. Learning Outcomes 1. Recognise the importance of peer reviewed scientific literature. 2. Recognise what constitutes plagiarism. 3. Preparation ofa literature review. 4. 2	Chemistry 2 This module introduces student to fundamentals of Organic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry. Learning Outcomes 1. 2	Mathematics for Science 2 This module introduces the functions which occur most commonly in science and ways of examining their behaviour. The primary focus is to understand where these functions occur, both in real life and science, and to provide students with the ability to recognise and analyse them appropriately. 2	Information Technology 2 This module deals with advanced practical applications of Information Technology. It covers the software packages for spreadsheets, desktop publishing, electronic notebooks and data management. The teaching methods used will be a combination of lectures, self-study, labs, tutorials, and any combination of discussion, case study, problem-solving exercises and computer-based learning. Learning Outcomes 1. Model problems using advanced features of Excel and build on concepts learned in Information Technology 1 2. 2	Introduction to Environmental Science This module investigates global, national and local environmental issues and assesses the role of man in his environment. It introduces the concept of social responsibility and explores the role of the environmental scientist. Learning Outcomes 1. 2	Introduction to Drug Discovery and Development This module introduces students to historical and contemporary aspects of drug discovery and development and examines the importance of regulation within the pharmaceutical sector. Learning Outcomes 1. Discuss the drug discovery process, from both historical and comtemperory perspective. 2. Comparedrug discovery from natural products and synthetic processes. 3. Distinguish between medicines and non medicinal products. 4. Describe the medicinal product development process and state the significant features attendant with each phase of this process. 5. 2	Introduction to Medical Biotechnology In this module the student will develop an overview of the broad field of Medical Biotechnology and will explore many of the various areas that contribute to this discipline. The module will include a brief history of Medical Biotechnology, including some key breakthrough moments in history. Furthermore the module will cover current key technological areas of scientific, economic and social interest and as well as targeted technologies of the future. Learning Outcomes 1. 1	Water Quality This module introduces the student to a wide range of physical, chemical and biological methods commonly used in water analysis in the context of the regulatory framework. Perform a range of analytical techniques on various water samples and comment on the accuracy, precisionand limitations of the data generated. 3. Interpret scientific data using knowledge of water quality parameters and relevant water legislation, where appropriate. 4. 1	Microbiology This module provides students with a theoretical and practical introduction to Microorganisms. It examines the influence of the bacteria, fungi and viruses on our lives and on the environment around us and gives the opportunity to grow, manipulate and examine these organisms microscopically. Learning Outcomes 1. Carry out basic microbiological laboratory procedures while working safely and aseptically 2. Manipulate laboratory results , produce graphs and tables and answer short questions to demonstrate a detailed understanding of practicals preformed. 3. Demonstrate a knowledge of the place of microorganisms in the living world and be able to describe the nature of both prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms and viruses. 4. 1	Environmental Nuisance This subject provides an introduction to the environmental issues that are easily sensed by people and which can cause annoyance or, in more extreme cases, nuisance. The learner should be able to identify the causes, impacts and effects of each and to outline strategies for the reduction of any impacts. Complaints handling is also addressed. Learning Outcomes 1. Explain the terms associated with nuisance issues and describe, where relevant, the terms, conventions and units of measure appropriate to each nuisance issue 2. Identify the main causes of each of the nuisance issues. 3. Identify and explain the significant adverse effects and impacts of these nuisance issues. 4. 1	Climate Science The module will impart the basis of meteorology and climatology, addressing the structure and function of the atmosphere and oceans in balancing earths' energy budget. In combination, the student will gain an appreciation of the human impact on these planetary systems, with measures to mitigate the long-term effects in a range of sectors explored. Describe and illustrate a range of basic fundamental scientific concepts, laws and principles which govern and give meaning to the role and behaviour of the atmosphere, weather and climate. 2. Explain the earths global energy budget, theinfluence of solar radiation and p lanetary-scale motions in the atmosphere and ocean. 3. Explain the key natural and human drivers of climate change. 4. 1	Aquatic Ecology: Theory and Lab This module introduces the fundamental concepts of aquatic ecology through developing an understanding of the abiotic and biotic interactions of aquatic ecosystems. It includes examples from a range of aquatic ecosystems including estuarine and transitional coastal waters, rivers, lakes and wetlands. The abiotic and biotic components of various aquatic ecosystems are described and reinforced by practical elements covering the sampling and classification of aquatic habitats and their communities. Learning Outcomes 1. Describe the fundamental ecological concepts of population demographics, regulation of population size, community structure, community interactions and community development of estuary, river, lake and wetland ecosystems 2. Demonstrate an understanding of the biotic and abiotic components of a range of aquatic ecosystems 3. 1	Environmental Quality Systems This module provides good laboratory practice skills and quality control systems required by an environmental scientist undertaking environmental sampling and analysis. Learning Outcomes 1. Follow documented scientific procedures and approved validation and quality assurance procedures to accurately gather, record, processand communicate scientific information 2. Respond to problems and opportunities that are likely to be encountered by a technician, working in a structured and managed environment 3. Choose and apply an appropiate analytical method that is \”fit for purpose\” for specified environmental samples. 4. 2	Environmental Instrumental Analysis The theoretical principles and environmental understanding and applications of instrumentation in general and in particular chromatography, spectroscopy and electroanalytical techniques are introduced. Describe the theoretical principles and operation of a range of analytical techniques and instruments and evaluate their role in environmental analysis. 3. 2	Terrestrial Ecology This module introduces the fundamental concepts of terrestrial ecology through developing an understanding of the abiotic and biotic interactions of terrestrial ecosystems. It includes examples from a range of terrestrial ecosystems including coastal, peatlands and heathlands, grasslands and forests. Students are introduced to the terrestrial environment and life in terrestrial ecosystems. The abiotic and biotic components of various terrestrial ecosystems are described and reinforced by practical elements covering the sampling and classification of terrestrial habitats and their communities. Describe the fundamental ecological concepts of populations, communities and environment interactions of a range of twerrestrial ecosystems (peatland, grassland, forest and coastal) 2. 2	Environmental Engineering This module introduces basic engineering principles, with a focus on the measurement of flows in the natural and built environment (hydraulics) and the principles behind the use of various methods for the conveyance of water and wastewater. The module also introduces the use of maps and scaled drawings, and basic surveying techniques (levelling). Learning Outcomes 1. Carry out a range of mathematical calculations to solve practical environmental engineering and environmental science problems 2. Calculate flow rates, velocities and depths for a range of flow measurement devices used in water and wastewater treatment plants 3. Use paper and electronic maps and drawings to identify and locate features and transfer a range of site data to maps and scaled drawings 4. 2	Environmental Microbiological Monitoring The aim of this module is to introduce students to a variety of laboratory methods used to assess the microbiological status of environmental samples and to teach them the importance of control and containment in environmental microbiology. Count microorganisms in and on environmental samplesusing a range of laboratory procedures 3. Explain the common methods used to control environmental microorganisms 4. 2	Introduction to Geographic Information Systems This module provides an introduction to tabular and spatial data management and analysis. Students are introduced to Cloud Based Geographic Information Systems (GIS On-Line & GISPro). A range of data compilation and data interrogation processes are introduced in order to provide the student with competence in a range of tabular and spatial data manipulation and presentation tasks. Learning Outcomes 1. Use Cloud based software(GIS On-Line &GISPro) to compile data and interrogate for final Map production 2. Create Point, Line and PoygonFeatureClasses to include editingassociated attributes 3. Work with GIS functions to assign symbology, manage labels and produce customised map documents. 4. 2	Soils and the Environment This module emphasises the importance of soil ecosystem services for the production of food and environmental protection, in addition to their value to society. Students are taught fundamental knowledge and practical skills on key physical, chemical and biological soil properties, in addition to their interactions, in agricultural, forest and urban soils. Factors influencing soil formation and the great soil groups are addressed. The module introduces students to the main global threats to soil health and their consequences. Learning Outcomes 1. Explainkey physical, chemical and biological soil properties. 2. Outline key characteristics ofgreat soil groupsand the influence of the main factors of their formation. 3. Demonstrate knowledge of major global threats to soil health (including their cause, nature and consequences) 4. Following completion of Year 1 in this General Entry Science programme, students progress to Year 2 of one of the following programmes of their choice. Please follow the links below to discover the modules on each individual programme.

After two years, students can graduate with a Higher Certificate in their chosen discipline or continue to Year 3 of their chosen discipline if they wish to complete a Level 7 ordinary degree.

Level 7 graduates can then continue their studies to Year 4 of their chosen discipline if they wish to complete a Level 8 honours degree.

Upon completion of the Level 8 honours degree, graduates may progress to postgraduate study in taught Masters programmes or Doctoral research programmes. These programmes can be studied in ATU Sligo or at other third level institutions.
