Course Overview
ATU Sligo, has been delivering courses in Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) for over 20 years. We are the leading provider of online OSH programmes in Ireland and we offer a full suite of online OSH courses at Levels 6, 7, 8 and 9.
This course is designed for anyone who may be responsible for health & safety within the workplace, that wish to gain a formal qualification in OSH and who may wish to become a Safety Practitioner (e.g. Safety Officer). Course graduates will be able to assist their employer in complying with workplace health & safety regulatory requirements.
Completing the Higher Certificate in OSH is the first step towards becoming a fully qualified Safety Officer when you continue your studies with ATU Sligo by progressing to the Level 7 BSc. in OSH afterwards.

Introductory Science for Occupational Safety and Health 1This module is designed to introduce human biology to the learner in a way that connects it directly with health and disease. The student will identify the basic physiology of the human body; cells, organs, systems and their functions. Particular focus will be on the systems most likely affected by occupational health hazards. Students will be able to link fundamental biological concepts to cases of occupational disease. Foundations for Occupational Safety and HealthThis module is aimed at those who require some knowledge of occupational safety and health (OSH). It is especially for those who have any responsibility for the general management of health and safety aspects associated with their work place or work activities or for providing general guidance to other employees on health and safety. The module aims to provide an overview of the main issues in OSH and the legislative context in which employers and employees must operate. Learning Outcomes 1. Outlinethe legalframework and requirements for Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) within organisations. 2. Identify basic hazards in the workplace and outline how a risk assessment would be conducted. 3. Identify physical, chemical, biological, psychosocial and ergonomic hazards. 4. Outline appropriate strategies for the management of basic OSH risk. 5. Detailhow accidents should be investigated in the workplace and demonstrate anunderstanding of root cause analysis. |

CommunicationsThis module aims to build learners knowledge and understanding of the theory and practice of communication skills relating to the field of Occupational Safety and Health. Develop shorttechnical oral presentations. 3. Represent technical and /or scientific information in a manner that facilitates ease of communication. |

Health and Safety RepresentationOn completion of this module, the participant will have the requisite skills, knowledge and competence to fulfil the role as Safety Representative in an organisation. They will understand their role as Safety Representative in promoting, representing employees, communicating and advising on matters relating to occupational safety and health. This module can be taken as a stand-alone module with participants receiving a 10 credit Minor Award at Level 6 or participants can take this module as part of the Higher Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health. Learning Outcomes 1. Identify the main legislation relating to health and safety in Irish workplaces 2. Understand the duties, functions and roles of those with responsibility for enforcing and complying with safety legislation with specific focus on HSA, employers, employees and safety representatives 3. Understand the functioning of an effective safety representative and safety committee. 4. Communicate safety and health information to peers and supervisors. 6. Conduct an investigation into a workplace accident. |

Physical and Chemical SafetyThis is an introductory unit to chemical safety with the aim of informing students about the intrinsic chemical, physical and health hazards associated with chemical storage and use. The topics covered include, chemical warning labels and symbols, SDSs, hazard identification, chemical risk assessment, hierarchy of control for chemical management. Learning Outcomes 1. Construction SafetyThis module deals with the fundamental principles of construction methods, materials and technology. The hazards associated with construction are explored and effective solutions and controls discussed. This module develops a student's ability to take part in a multi-disciplinary construction team. The challenges facing OSH professionals in the industry will be addressed along with the development of solutions. Learning Outcomes 1. Describe construction activities and establish safe work practices through hazard identification and risk assessment. 2. Develop professional competencies with reference to practitioner based activities. 4. Discuss the challenges that the construction industry poses to the safety professional 5. Communicate the importance and relevance of safety in the construction environment to a range of audiences. 7. Holders of this award eligible for entry to BSc in Occupational Safety & Health (Online) full time or online.
Students with a NFQ Level 6 award can easily continue to a NFQ Level 7 award within a similar discipline.

Leaving Certificate or equivalent award.
The course is aimed at anyone with an interest in Occupational Safety and Health that may or may not have any previous qualifications. Exemptions in specific modules on the Higher Certificate are available to students who have completed the L6 Special Purpose Award in Occupational Safety and Health or who have a QQI (Fetac) award or equivalent in Health and Safety Representation Training.
Applicants with other qualifications and with relevant work experience may also be considered through ATU Sligo’s Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) process. RPL is a process that may allow you to gain admission to a programme or to receive exemptions / credit from some parts of a programme based on demonstrated learning that you may have achieved through another programme of study or through your work and career.
