The overall aim of this module is to develop students' understanding of and capacity for critical thinking, creative thinking and problem-solving. The module is focused on creating the ability to deduce and interpret information, recognize assumptions, draw inferences, evaluate arguments, exercise critical judgment in decision making and generate an active open-minded thinker. The module seeks to create a critical awareness of the fallacies in arguments and the cognitive biases in decision making.

4. Recognise behavioural biases in thinking and decision making;
5. Illustrate the use of creative thinking techniques in problem solving;

The aim of this module is to develop the learners ability to critically appraise what constitutes proper governance and how effective governance is evidenced in organisations. The module will equip learners with an awareness of the structures and processes which operate in well governed organisations, and it will also sensitise learners to the impicit nature of how systems operate within a real world context. The role and leadership responsibilities of boards will be explored alongside the accountability of both directors and managers, the nature of fiduciary duties and executive and non-executive functions.

The module will be responsive to regional and sector specific requirements and will initially focus on the need as the Health, Social Care and Public Sector as required.

The aim of this module is to develop students' understanding of quality, quality improvement and innovation. The module will focus on the context, key principles and competencies associated with quality and innovation. The module will create a critical awareness of the contemporary themes. It will encourage the student to explore how quality is defined and measured in relation to health and/or social care. The module will include quality improvement methodology. There will be a focus on application to practice and students will consider aspects of quality and innovation from their own area of practice and application of theory.

1. Demonstrate and apply the principles of Quality Improvement.
2. Demonstrate and apply the science of improvement and improvement principles.
3. Utilise different techniques of data collection and measurement and understand the role of measurement in improvement.
4. Demonstrate the ability to identify the opportunities in practice to analyse opportunites for improvement.
5. Synthesise the range of improvement methods available for reducing harm to service user
6. Demonstrate the appropriate use of at least one improvement tool in a service context and participate/lead on an improvement activity. Apply the principles of positive risk taking in care practice.

The overall aim of this module is to develop students' understanding of patient/client/person* safety. The module is focused on providing the student with the context, key principles and competencies associated with person safety. The module seeks to create a critical awareness of the contemporary themes and will offer a historical context to person safety and will encourage the learner to explore recent and historial events related to their own area of health or social care practice. The module includes themes such as risk management, human factors as well as broader person safety themes. There will be a focus on application to practice so that students will consider aspects of person safety threats from their own area of practice.

*The generic term of person safety will be used throughout this module and refers to any preferred term from the learners area of practice such as patient, client, service user.

1. Critique and apply strategies to identify, analyse and address patient safety issues.
2. Analyse lessons from high reliability organizations, health and/or social care practices nationally and internationally including the importance teamwork and culture.
3. Analyse and critically evaluate fundamental issues in human error and systems thinking related to improving person safety and the impact of organisational behaviour.
4. Demonstrate the principles of risk management and apply them to practice
5. Critically evaluate key patient/client/service user safety issues in relation to their application to health and/or social care systems
6. Develop an in-depth understanding of how systems can be changed and developed in order to maximise person safety

This module will assist learners in developing critical awareness of the range of research and innovation methods used in the sphere of outdoor education and how to appropriately select from these in designing a project proposal. It will provide students with the knowledge necessary to design a realistic, practically based and robustly-designed project that seeks to improve practice. Learners will be required to consider their proposed project area, articulate aims and objectives and submit a project proposal. Learners who successfully complete this module will be competent at selecting and applying appropriate methods and techniques to conduct a substantial project.

1. Develop,articulate and justify a research/project aim.

2. Articulate coherent research projectobjectives which are appropriately related to the aim of the project.

3. Select research methods which areappropriate to the research aims and objectives.

4. Set out and defend the rational for selecting a particular methodological approach suitable to the research question.

5. Articulate critical insight into ethical and data protection issues and appropriately address these.

6. Formulate a research proposal for a dissertation.

This module aims to develop competencies of critical analysis of safer investigation systems in health and social care settings. The learner will be challenged to critically discuss patient/client/service user safety in a number of contexts. It will draw on themes from ancillary modules.

1. Critique an investigation methodology used in health and social care.

2. Critically discuss an example of incident management framework in a relevant work setting.

3. Synthesise the learning frompublished investigation reports.

4. Evaluate a people management tooland how it impacts safety and quality outcomes.
