This courses is Free or 90% Funded under the Springboard+ and Human Capital Initiative (HCI).
The Certificate in Health Project Management Level 9 programme aims to introduce students to the core concepts within health project management. Students will also gain insights into using leadership skills for the effective management of change. Students will also become proficient in a range of research methods and tools in qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods research approaches.
This programme is designed to support the upskilling of current and prospective employees in the health and social care sector, who are, or who will be involved in the design, delivery or evaluation of health and social care projects or service improvement programmes, but who do not have formal training or education in this area.
Objectives of this course:
To develop knowledge and analytical skills in the planning and delivery of evidence based health projects.
To develop leadership and health project management competencies and show evidence of using these in health or other settings
To develop competencies in quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods research design
To develop self – reflective and leadership skills in the management of organisational change and in health project management
To develop professional practice skills to work autonomously and in collaboration with a broad range of relevant stakeholders.
The online, part-time Certificate in Health Project Management Level 9 is taught over one year on a part-time and online basis. The online delivery of this programmes affords flexibility for those wishing to attain a formal qualification in this area but who are not able to attend campus based or full-time programmes.

Health Project ManagementThis module introduces students to the core concepts and theories of project management and how to apply these to the delivery of projects in a health/community setting. This module will give students an understanding of the processes and stages of the project management cycle and the knowledge and skills required. Learning Outcomes 1. Appraise the role of projects within the context of healthcare and community organisations justifying the contexts in which a project management approach would be appropriate. 2. Distinguish between project management frameworks and processes,and tailor these to projects in a health care or community setting. 3. Devise a health focused project plan demonstrating an understanding key project management knowledge areas including but not limited toscope, schedule cost, schedule and quality management. 4. Devise and defend a project management communication plan and a project monitoring and evaluation plan. 5. Identify and analyse strategies for effective stakeholder management and engagement and during all stages of the project 6. Critically analyse approaches to increasing team effectiveness to ensure the successful delivery of project objectives and tasks |

Qualitative and Mixed Methods for Health ResearchThis module will explore the concepts involved in establishing and collecting qualitative and mixed methods research data in a variety of health, educational and community settings.Students will reflect on the quality of published qualitative research and learn about the importance of rigour in qualitative research. Students will develop research questions suited to qualitative and mixed methods and be involved in collecting qualitative data and the initial stages of analysis. Learning Outcomes 1. Design a research proposal that is appropriate to qualitative or mixed methods approaches and demonstrates an understanding of the basic principles of qualitative/mixed methods research methodologies. 2. Collect and conduct an initial analysis of qualitative data which is appropriate to a qualitative research question. 3. Critically consider the different ways to combine qualitative and quantitative research in a mixed method study. |

Change Management and Leadership in Health Project ManagementThis module will provide the learner with opportunities to engage with relevant theories of leadership and change management and reflect on the relevance of these in relation to their own practice and the process of managing projects. Learning Outcomes 1. Critique different leadership styles and competencies that can be deployed to successfully manage projects and teams in health service settings 2. Critically evaluate advantages and disadvantages of different research approaches and methods to studying leadership and leadership development 3. Communicate change management plans utilising change management models and frameworks. 4. Compare different paradigms and perspectives of organisational change and how they influence the processes and outcomes of the change. 5. Make a case for the value of integrating project management and change management process within a health context 6. Recognise and respond to the ethical challenges raised by leading and managing change in organisations. 7. Take a reflective approach in appraising their competencies in leadership and change management and identifying areas for further professional development relevant to future needs. |

Applied Practices in Quantitative MethodsUnderstanding the foundations of applied quantitative methods in the area of health permits critical evaluation of quantitative analysis across the literature as well as identification and implementation of relevant quantitative tools and methods alongside health projects. Quantitative methodologies focus on 'objective measurements and the statistical, mathematical, or numerical analysis of data collected through polls, questionnaires, and surveys, or by manipulating pre-existing statistical data using computational techniques.' (Babbie, Earl R. 2010) This module will provide evaluation skills in interpretation, critical appraisal and implementation of quantitative methods affording those involved in the management and implementation of health projects the skills necessary to design and enhance appropriate quantitative applications. Learning Outcomes 1. Defend the applications ofquantitative methods and associated outputs in applied quantitative methods 2. Apply critical appraisal methodsofquantitative analysis in the literature 3. Evaluate quality in reporting of quantitative analysis and synthesis evidence 4. Construct a valid quantitative tool for evaluation of health-related interventions |

Both awards combined with a completed thesis module leads to a Master of Science in Health Promotion and Project Management. Applicants with a 2.2 Honours award in a relevant discipline may apply.
Applicants with other qualifications and with relevant work experience may also be considered through ATU Sligo’s Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) process. Not limited to but including digital health, medicine, public health, nursing and midwifery, health and wellbeing, acute care, health education, health promotion, primary care, disability services, services for older persons, mental health services, emergency management, quality improvement services, patient safety, and human resources, in the statutory, voluntary and community sector.
Careers
The Certificate in Health Project Management course, has been designed in consultation with Portfolio Managers, Programme Leads, Project Managers and Service Managers in health and social care sector in recognition of, and in response to the demand for a workforce equipped with project management, research, and leadership skills, required to effectively lead, and manage projects and service/quality improvement programmes in contemporary health and social care.
This programme will equip graduates with the skills and knowledge to work in a variety of project and service improvement roles in the statutory, community and voluntary health and social care sector. Graduates may pursue work opportunities as Project Managers, Project Team Leads, Project Officers, Programme Managers, Portfolio Leads, Programme Support Officers, Researchers, Quality Improvement Leads, and related service improvement roles within the health and social care sector.
