Course Overview
This programme aims to introduce students to the core concepts and competencies required for health promotion and wellness practice. Students will become proficient in utilising evidence informed practice, statistical and data analysis and in health behaviour change approaches.
Objectives of the Postgraduate Certificate in Health Promotion & Wellness Practice:
- To develop health promotion competencies and show evidence of using these in health or other settings
- To develop skills in the planning, implementation and evaluation of evidence based health behaviour change initiatives
- To be able to appraise, communicate and disseminate evidence of health promotion research and practice
- To develop self – reflective skills as a health promotion and wellness practitioner
- To develop professional practice skills to work autonomously and in collaboration with a broad range of relevant stakeholders.

Concepts and Competencies for Health PromotionThis module will equip students with the core concepts and key competencies required for working within the field of health, health promotion and wellness. Illustrate they have detailed knowledge and understanding of core competencies required for health promotion practicioners 3. Critically appraise health related strategies and polices 4. Evidence Based Health Promotion PracticeThe Student will learn about the process of Evidence Based Practice (EBP) which includes how to form a research question, search for relevant evidence, the subsequent analysis and synthesis of the findings and the dissemination and implementation of these findings. Students will also examine how to incorporate practitioner experience and service user views into their evidence based practice. This module will equip also students with the key competencies and skills required to source, critically appraise and communicate evidence within the health, wellness, health promotion and public health area. Learning Outcomes 1. Demonstrate an understanding of core epidemiological principles relevant for critical appraisal of epidemiological studies. 2. Intelligently source and critically appraise and synthesiseevidence pertaining to health, wellness, health promotion and public health 3. Develop strategies and utilise frameworks for putting evidence based research into practice 4. Critically discuss how evaluationscan be designed to contribute to practice informed evidence in health promotion. 5. Communicate evidence at appropriate level in a variety of settings and to different population groups across the lifespan |

Health Behaviour ChangeThis modules aims to equip students with key skills in health behaviour change theory and practice. Learning Outcomes 1. Source and critically appraise evidence pertaining to health behaviour change and health behaviour maintenance 2. Critically appraise current theories, frameworks and techniques pertaining to behaviour change 3. Develop and understand core principles of behaviour change at individual, intrapersonal, environmental and policy based levels 4. Source, interpret and apply appropriate and referenced behaviour change data and research in a variety of health related behaviours |

Statistics and Data AnalysisThis module will equip the student with advanced statistical techniques for analysing data in the Public Health and Health Promotion fields. It provides the students with the ability to apply appropriate statistical techniques to data sets gathered during project work and also to comment on and rate techniques used in existing studies. Learning Outcomes 1. Formulate conclusions on the health of a population by applying a range ofadvanced statistical techniques in the analysis of population health data. 2. Model the relationships between variables using regression analysis 3. Explain the concept of survival analysis and apply the most commonly used mortality/survival functions 4. Justify the selection and application of appropriate quantitative analysis in global health literature and reports. 5. Use a statistical software package to carry out analysis on health related datasets. |

Recommended Study Hours per week
Live Lectures: Live lectures normally take place between 6pm and 10pm, Monday to Thursday but this may vary depending on the availability of specific lecturers. For the Certificate in Health Promotion and Wellness Practice, students are expected to attend 2 lectures each week which can range from 1-3 hours. If the Live Classroom scheduled times for the live online lectures do not suit you, recordings will be made available through Moodle.

Progression
Students who wish to continue their studies following completion of this programme can enrol on the Postgraduate Certificate in Health Project Management. Both awards combined with a completed thesis module leads to a Master of Science in Health Promotion and Project Management. If you would like to apply for the thesis module, please apply here and select Health Promotion and Project Management Thesis – Restricted Entry in the drop-down box for the course you are applying for. Students can enrol directly onto the Master of Science in Health Promotion Practice.
