Atlantic Technological University (ATU) will host academics from partner universities across Europe as work begins on developing the EU GREEN Alliance Joint Master’s degree in Green Energy for Sustainability and Resilience. Representatives from the University of Gävle (HiG) in Sweden, the University of Oradea (UO) in Romania, and the University of Extremadura (UEx) in Spain will gather at ATU Sligo from Monday, 25th November to Thursday, 29th November 2024 to collaborate on this ambitious new educational initiative.

This collaborative gathering marks a significant milestone in shaping a transformative educational programme that addresses the urgent need for skilled professionals in the renewable energy sector.

Although representatives from Sweden, Romania, and Spain will attend in person, the joint effort also includes Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg (OvGU) in Germany. Together, the universities are developing a cutting-edge Master’s degree. The discussions in Sligo will focus on defining the curriculum, core modules, and a mobility structure that will allow students to study at multiple partner institutions, gaining valuable international perspectives.

Programme Highlights:

The Joint Master’s degree, spanning four semesters and 120 ECTS credits, is designed to prepare graduates to lead the transition to sustainable energy systems. Key features include:

European Mobility: Students will study at multiple partner universities, enhancing their global perspective and professional networks.

Focus on Sustainability: The curriculum will integrate renewable energy solutions, including solar, wind, geothermal, and marine energy systems, alongside energy efficiency and storage technologies.

Industry Collaboration: Partnerships with leading companies will provide internships, practical training, and real-world experience.

Research Integration: Close collaboration with EU GREEN research clusters ensures the programme remains at the forefront of innovation in sustainable energy.

Dr Salem Gharbia, Head of the Department of Environmental Science at ATU, emphasised the importance of the initiative; “This programme represents a significant step forward in preparing the next generation of experts to address the global energy transition. By bringing together the expertise of five leading universities, we are creating an innovative, multidisciplinary curriculum that equips students with the skills and knowledge needed to drive sustainable energy solutions and make a real impact on the world.”

This new Master’s degree programme aligns with the EU GREEN Alliance’s mission to create impactful, sustainable education that contributes to achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goals 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and 13 (Climate Action).

ATU’s EU Green Alliance Co-ordinator, Professor Frances Lucy, said the programme is a collective effort,

“ATU acknowledges the efforts of all those who have contributed to bringing this initiative to fruition. The collective effort of partner institutions underscores the strength of the EU GREEN Alliance in addressing global challenges through education and collaboration.”
