Construction sector employers attending the recent Atlantic Technological University (ATU) Galway Built Environment Careers Fair have expressed strong demand for students and graduates of ATU’s degree courses in Architectural Technology, Civil Engineering, Construction Management and Quantity Surveying.
Over 100 ATU students on the built environment courses go on work placement from January each year.
John Hanahoe, senior lecturer in the ATU Galway-Mayo Department of Building & Civil Engineering, says: “Over the years that this fair has been running we have seen a big demand for our students and graduates so that they usually have several offers of interesting placements or graduate positions to choose from.”
“Employers are very keen to offer them positions as they see them as potential employees following graduation. Many students return from placement to their final year at ATU Galway with a job after graduation already lined up”.
Several representatives from the sector who attended the event share their views.
Éamonn Larkin of Glenveagh says: “Glenveagh were delighted to participate in the Careers Fair. It was inspiring to engage with such enthusiastic and talented students. The passion and curiosity we witnessed, particularly around the opportunities in Ireland’s residential sector, were truly impressive. We’re excited about the prospect of bringing new graduates into our team, where they can play a pivotal role in shaping the future of housing in Ireland.”
Jamie Donald of Ryan Hanley says: “We were delighted to engage with future graduates in the Built Environment sector at ATU Galway. With unprecedented levels of investment in infrastructure in Ireland at present, and projected significant increases in this spend in years to come, this is an exciting time to graduate into a fast-growing sector. The projected demand for professionals in the areas of house building, water & wastewater, energy and public transport infrastructure provides a wealth of opportunities for graduates.”
Clarisse Tobin of BAM says: “The ATU Galway Built Environment Careers Fair has proven to be an invaluable event for identifying fresh talent. The fair provides direct access to a pool of highly skilled, motivated students who are well-prepared for the challenges of our industry. We’ve been consistently impressed with the technical expertise and innovative thinking of ATU graduates.”
