Atlantic Technological University (ATU) together with Donegal County Council celebrated the continued success of their Civil Engineering Work Placement partnership on Tuesday, 1 October 2024.

Donegal County Council staff visited the campus to meet with ATU Civil Engineering & Construction lecturers and students to mark the occasion.

Anne Boner, Head of Department of Civil Engineering & Construction at ATU Donegal commented:

“We are delighted to continue our partnership opportunities with Donegal County Council. Work placement is an important element of the programmes we provide here at ATU Donegal.  Our students, as future graduate engineers, will play a vital role across a wide range of industries in the North-West and beyond.”

This partnership provides significant experience to final year students studying Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) in Civil Engineering in ATU Donegal. Civil Engineering students work one day per week on a range of Donegal County Council projects with this renewed partnership announcement. This work placement gives students the opportunity to gain on-the-job training, and is made possible by the support of Donegal County Council engineering staff who organise placements throughout the county which including road construction projects, local area offices and the National Roads Office.

John G McLaughlin, Chief Executive, Donegal County Council adds:

“We are delighted to to mark the continued partnership of the Civil Engineering Work Placement with the ATU, assisting young engineers to develop their careers and play a part in delivering key infrastructural projects in the coming years. With continuing shortages of engineers across all disciplines being reported by industry, this partnership plays a vital role in enticing more uptake into this profession and providing a skilled workforce for a wide range of industry and services in Donegal and the entire North West Region, and we as a Council are keen to play our part in supporting the talent of the future.”
