Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science James Lawless TD and Minister of State Marian Harkin TD have announced approval for the Atlantic Technological University (ATU) to purchase a parcel of land (16.35 acres) across the road from the existing ATU campus in Sligo.

The lands are currently owned by Sligo County Council and ATU has confirmed it will fund the purchase from within its own existing reserves.

Speaking at ATU’s Sligo campus today, Minister Lawless said: “This is a major milestone in the development of ATU and will secure its future growth and advancement. This site is of significant strategic importance, allowing the Technological University to future proof their higher education provision in the region and deliver for Sligo as an integral part of ATU for decades to come.”

Minister of State Marian Harkin added: “This is wonderful news for Sligo, increasing educational opportunities in the region, while also allowing the Technological University to be a driver of economic and social development.”

Dr Orla Flynn, President of ATU, said: “ATU is delighted to receive Ministerial approval to close out the purchase of land from Sligo County Council.  We look forward to seeing this progressing in due course. Our thanks as always to the Ministers, the HEA and of course Sligo County Council for all their support to get this over the line.”
