Atlantic Technological University (ATU) welcomed over 2,500 visitors to its sixth annual Sligo Engineering Fair, held on Sunday, 2 March. The event, organised in collaboration with Engineers Ireland NW and global healthcare leader Abbott, offered an exciting day filled with exploration, innovation, and hands-on activities for all ages.

Attendees had the opportunity to build and launch foam rockets, construct towers and bridges from marshmallows and toothpicks, and meet “Alex” the robot and “Sparky,” the pet robot dog. The fair also featured interactive workshops, live demonstrations, and engaging performances designed to spark curiosity and highlight the impact of engineering in everyday life.

Reflecting on the event, Dr Trevor McSharry, Head of the Faculty of Engineering & Design at ATU Sligo, added: “It was fantastic to welcome so many visitors to our campus for this year’s Engineering Fair. This event is a wonderful opportunity to open our doors to the community and showcase the dynamic and diverse world of engineering. Through interactive exhibits and hands-on activities, we aim to inspire the next generation of engineers by demonstrating the creativity, problem-solving, and innovation that drive this field.”

Highlights of the day included Lego workshops with Bricks4Kids, the Engineering Discovery Zone, and interactive robotics sessions with Robothink! Visitors also enjoyed the return of the Abbott Engineering Room, where they explored STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) through hands-on experiments and interactive stations.
