Tell us a little bit about yourself and what led you to choosing your course?

I chose the course in Computer Networks and Cybersecurity in ATU Sligo because I am passionate and eager to learn new things and I love a good challenge!

I enjoy working with computers and solving complex problems, which makes this course a perfect fit for my interests and skills.

As a 20-year-old woman in STEM, I am determined to combat the stigma in this industry and pave the way for more diversity and inclusion. Therefore, this course will not only equip me with the technical expertise that I need to excel in the IT industry but also empower me to be a role model for others aspiring to enter this field.

As I enter my third year into my degree, of course there have been plenty of ups and downs. However, I would not change a single thing. I have met some of my closest friends who have no idea how much they have helped me along the way thus far. The lecturers are extremely approachable and encouraging also!

What specifically about the course do you particularly enjoy?

I thoroughly enjoy the Computer Networks and Cybersecurity course at ATU Sligo because it allows me to collaborate with others who share my passion for technology. The IT world is constantly evolving, which means there is always something new to learn which keeps me fully engaged and excited!

Additionally, the challenges presented to me in this field push me to think critically and put my skillset to use. I am constantly problem-solving which makes it a very rewarding experience.

What is the best thing about your course that you think new applicants should know?

I think the best thing about the Computer Networks and Cybersecurity course at Sligo is the hands-on approach to learning. New applicants should know that this course not only covers the latest advancements and techniques in the IT field, but it also provides practical experience through real-world projects. The work placement in 3rd year is also an excellent opportunity to put your learnings to use and gain more knowledge about the working world in this industry. This ensures that students are well-prepared for the challenges and equipped with the right skillset to excel in future careers.

What are your favourite modules on the course?

My favourite modules in the course thus far, are Linux, Maker Lab and Routing & Switching. The Linux module is so fascinating with its powerful open-source operating system and is crucial for Cybersecurity. The Maker Lab module is incredibly engaging, allowing me to creatively apply my knowledge and work with other people on a hands-on project. Lastly, the Routing and Switching module provides a deeper understanding of network infrastructure and covering the use of cables, routers, and switches to ensure secure communication. I also enjoy the configuration of routers and switches and troubleshooting connectivity issues.

If you were speaking with a first year student about to start your course, what advice would you give them?

If I were speaking with a first-year student about to start the Computer Networks and Cybersecurity course at Sligo, I would advise them to try their best to engage fully with the hands-on Labs and practical’s. Try to always ask questions and never be afraid to ask for help! The lecturers are extremely friendly and encouraging! Try and stay updated with the latest trends in the IT world as it is constantly evolving, and it is good to have that extra bit of knowledge.

Lastly, no matter what college course you pick, there will always be ups and downs and some doubts. However, everything works out in the end! Remember to always take time for yourself and balance your studies with socialising and self-care!

If you are involved in sport, volunteering, working or have other passions you pursue outside of your academic life, can you tell us about that. Especially mention any Teams, Clubs or Awards.

Outside of College, I am also a dancer. I am part of a dance school back home in Longford and I love it! I also have been apart of the dance society in ATU Sligo, and it has been a great time for me to enjoy myself and take a break from study.

I also really love going to the Gym and running. I took part in my first Half-Marathon in 2023 at the age of 19 and I raised money for a Children’s Hospital.

I have taken part in an 8-month mentoring program by Dell Technologies for women in STEM. I was paired with a mentor from Dell who provided me with support and guidance.

I have also taken part in my very first Zero Days Capture the Flag (CTF) event in Croke Park, Dublin in March 2024. My team came 48th out of 92 teams in Ireland. I got to put my Linux and OSINT skills to use. We were the first team to represent ATU Sligo in a CTF.

What are your plans after ATU Sligo and any long-term goals you are aiming for?

After completing my studies at ATU Sligo, I am considering furthering my education by pursuing a Master’s degree to deepen my expertise. However, the dream is to pursue a career in the exciting world of Formula 1, working with a team behind the scenes in data and cybersecurity.

I would love to travel to gain more experiences.

My long-term goal is to succeed in my field, make the people around me proud and break the stigma surrounding women in technology and inspiring others to just go for it!
