Tell us a little bit about yourself and what led you to choosing your course

My name is Clíodhna Fitzsimons, I’m 22 years old and I’m from Co. Cavan. I am in my final year studying a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition, Food and Business Management. When I started in St Angela’s first, I was doing a Bachelor of Education in Home Economics and Irish, however, I soon realised that teaching wasn’t for me. I was introduced to this course by one of my lecturers and once I had chatted to the BSc course co-ordinators, I knew this area was what I had an interest in.

What do you enjoy most about the course?

I really enjoy the business aspect of the course and also the practical cooking labs.

What is the best thing about the course that you think new applicants should know?

The career opportunities from the course are very broad, you can opt to go into the food manufacturing sector or the business sector. Better yet, it gives you the skills and capabilities to open your own business which I hope to do sometime in the future.

Any favourite modules during your time studying?

In our final year, we undertake a New Product Development module in which we have to develop a food or drink product from product concept to finished product. This module combines both the food and business aspects of the course. We present our finished product alongside our business plan to an external panel and there are awards for best product concept and most innovative packaging. My NPD product is luxury cheesecakes which are aimed at the hospitality sector.

What do you like best about studying in ATU?

The small class sizes are probably one of my favourite aspects of studying in St Angela’s. The lecturers get to know everyone personally and they know your strengths and weaknesses when it comes to academic work.

Can you tell us about your work placement? How does this benefit you in preparing for your future career?

In our 3rd year, we undertake a five-month placement in a food or beverage manufacturing company. I carried out my placement as a Compliance Intern in Abbott Nutrition in Cootehill, Co. Cavan. It was a great experience seeing how a large multinational company such as Abbott operates. The skills I learned there alongside the skills I’ve learned in the last four years in St Angela’s has secured me a job as a Graduate Buyer with Aldi which starts in September 2025.

What advice would you give a first-year student starting in ATU?

If you are struggling, don’t be afraid to ask for help! There are many different resources you can reach out to such as your course co-ordinator, PAL (Personal Academic Liaison), the student services officer and many more. Another thing I would say is to get out and meet people, although four years of college seems like a long time, they go by very quick so make sure and enjoy yourself when you can!
