Tell us a little bit about yourself and what led you to choose your course.

I’m 17 and I’m from Manorhamilton, Co Leitrim and I attended St Clare’s Comprehensive School in Manorhamilton. I chose this course because in 2018, I had a brain tumour, and during my time in the hospital, I experienced the nurses and doctors working first-hand. The nurses worked hard to make my stay and illness tolerable, and from that time, I’ve always wanted to help patients the way they helped me.

What do you like about life in your campus location?

I study at the St Angelas campus, which is rural and small which I love. The scenery is amazing! Class groups are small, and you get to know all the lecturers, making it easier to ask for help when needed. It’s also easier to make friends and get to know your classmates when the class sizes are smaller.

What advice would you give to a student thinking about coming to ATU?

I would recommend visiting ATU on their Open Days to get a feel for the place and talk to lecturers, as it really shows you what you’ll experience when you come to study.

What do/did you enjoy most about your course?

I personally enjoy how much practical coursework there is as I’m not as good with theory and it allows you to learn all the skills needed to a high standard.

If you were speaking with a first-year student about to start your course, what advice/information would you give them?

Make friends from the start – they will be your support system, and keep on top of class work so you don’t get stressed out.

If you are/were involved in sport, volunteering, working or have other passions you pursue outside of your academic life, can you tell us about that?

I started volunteering with my local Order of Malta in September of 6th year and carried it on through college. It gave me a great insight into what my course would be like.

What are your plans after graduating?

I plan to further my studies and specialise in midwifery and paediatric nursing. I want to move abroad for a few years to build up my savings before returning home to Ireland to build my future, possibly specialising in women’s reproductive health.
