ATU Alumni Awards - Nomination Criteria

The eligibility criteria for nominations presented to alumni who have made outstanding contributions in any of the following areas: Business, Science & Health, Engineering & Computing, Education, Design & Humanities are listed below.

Nominees will:

  • Be a past student of ATU or one of its legacy institutions.
  • Normally be a major award holder. Consideration will also be given to alumni who have studied for at least one semester or undertaken a minimum of 30 credits from ATU.
  • In the case of international students, have studied for a semester followed by a major award from a partner university is considered eligible.
  • Normally attend the award’s ceremony..

The eligibility criteria for nomination to the President’s Award

  • A nominee is considered as:
  • Anyone who has studied at Atlantic Technological University for at least one semester or any person who has a strong affiliation with the University through a deep collaborative relationship.
  • Someone who has made a significant contribution to arts/sport/society/culture/voluntary and/or outstanding contribution to the region.

Nominations will not be considered in the following instances:

  • Posthumous awards will not normally be considered unless exceptional circumstances permit.
  • Self-nominations will not be considered.
  • Serving members of staff of the University are not eligible, however previous employees may be suitable for nomination but must not have been an employee of the University within the last 5 years.
  • Serving members of Governing Body.
  • Serving Irish public representatives.
  • Alumni who have previously won an award in any category will not be eligible to win the same award again or win in another category in a consecutive year.
  • Honorary Doctorate award recipients.

Nominations may be submitted by:

ATU alumni, staff, students and the wider community.

ATU Alumni Awards Selection Committee

Nominees are considered by the ATU Alumni Awards Selection Committee comprising,

  • ATU President or their nominee
  • Vice President for Academic Affairs or their nominee
  • Deans of Faculties or their nominee
  • Vice President for External Engagement or their nominee
  • Academic Council nominee
  • One Student Union President or their nominee
  • Marketing and/or Communication Manager
  • One Student Services representative or their nominee
  • One external representative or alumnus 

Nomination Process

  • The Alumni Office along with other university representatives will compile an initial longlist of submitted nominees.
  • A shortlist of nominations will be presented to the Alumni Awards Selection Committee for consideration.
  • At the point of the shortlist, nominees will be notified by the Alumni Office that they have been put forward to the Alumni Awards Committee for review.
  • The Alumni Awards Committee will put forward the recommendations for alumni award recipients which will be submitted for approval by the Governing Body.
  • Final selected award recipients will be contacted by the university.
  • Between three to six alumni will be selected as awardees across various award areas.
  • Alumni Award recipients will be recorded on the Alumni Awards database.

Note: At the discretion of the Alumni Awards Selection Committee, a nominee may be kept on the ATU Alumni Awards database to be considered in the following year.

ATU Alumni Awards Nomination Schedule 2024/2025

  • September 2024: Call for nomination opens
  • October 2024: Call for nomination closes
  • October 2024: Longlisting nominations conducted by the Alumni Office and university representatives nominated by the Alumni Awards Selection Committee
  • November 2024: Shortlisting nominations conducted by the Alumni Awards Selection Committee
  • January 2025: Award recipients notified
  • April and May 2025: Awards Presentation at ATU Spring Conferring with dinner held after for award recipients and invited guests.
