Course Overview
Our Bachelor of Science in Agriculture provides you with the skills and knowledge to pursue a diverse and rewarding career in the agricultural industry. Whether it’s as a farm manager or in agricultural sales, the opportunities are vast and diverse.
One of the most unique aspects of this course is that it will provide you with a 12 week placement on a working farm and related agricultural businesses. It will demonstrate to future employers your capacity to apply technical skills to real-world situations.
Outside of your placement you’ll be gaining knowledge in the key areas of soil and plant science, ruminant husbandry and agriculture business management. You’ll also learn about Farm Waste and Environmental Science, Livestock Production and Animal Science in Year 3. Equally, should you not wish to continue onto third year you can exit the course with a Higher Certificate in Science in Agriculture following the successful completion of your first two years.

Introduction to AgricultureThe learner will be introduced to the husbandry and care of animals and crops used in agriculture. They will develop an understanding of the importance of careful husbandry to prevent disease being introduced into the agricultural system. The learners will also be introduced to agricultural accounts, and to health and Safety concerns in an agricultural setting. The effect of Agriculture on the environment will also be introduced. Animal Husbandry, Nutrition and WelfareThis module will introduce the learner to the husbandry of healthy animals and help to develop an understanding of welfare in general terms. Fundamentals of Biology and ChemistryThis module will introduce the learner to the fundamentals of biology including the structure and functions of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and the characteristics of the major biological macromolecules. The module will also introduce the student to the fundamental concepts of chemistry. Learning Outcomes 1. Describe the structural features of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and the functions of cell organelles. |

Mathematical Skills for Science 1To give the student confidence to conduct scientific calculation effectively. To give the student a strong foundation in algebraic methods and in manipulating formulae. To introduce learners to concepts of measurement and data, and methods for the representation, exploration, and management of such data. Ruminant HusbandryThe learner will be introduced to the husbandry and care of sheep and cattle. The learner will be introduced to the many components of a healthy diet and will understand the importance of good nutrition and management in promoting health and increasing profitability at farm level. Argicultural Business ManagementThis module incorporates the theory and practice of accounting, finance, and marketing to build on and complement modules which describe agricultural systems. Students will develop an understanding of the Farm financial planning process, performance indicators and the Common Agricultural Policy. Tax implications for the farm will also be covered as will the new technologies within for farm software. Learning Outcomes 1. Complete a detailed whole farm financial and logistical planning exercise, including farm profit analysis and the use of key performance indicators. |

Agricultural MicrobiologyThis module will introduce the student to the fundamentals of microbiology relevant to agriculture. The student will be introduced to the different microorganisms and gain a basic understanding of how microorganisms grow, can be affected by their environment and can be controlled. The module will have both theory and practical elements and the student will gain a useful understanding of the significance of microbes in areas such as milk, meat, silage and water quality. Learning Outcomes 1. Identify the major groups of micro-organisms and describe the conditions that affect their growth. |

Work PlacementThis module aims to give all students operational experience of a working farm. In addition, students can also obtain experience in an Agriculture related business/enterprise. Animal ScienceThe learner will be introduced to core concepts of animal science. This module will give an overview of animal production at world, EU and national levels, with emphasis on those aspects most relevant to animal production in Ireland. The learner will be introduced to the roles of animal breeding/genetics, animal physiology and animal nutrition as well as animal health, behaviour, and welfare in Animal Science, including aspects of ongoing and future research areas. Agricultural Accounts and MarketingThis module will further develop the key skills of the learner in the area of agricultural accounts and their importance, as well as covering the fundamentals of agribusiness marketing. It is intended to give an overview of the concepts used in financial accounting and an understanding of the financial statements produced. It will also equip the learner with a strong basis from which to develop a marketing plan for an organization involved with farming, as well as outlining long term leasing and alternative tax incentives. Agriculture and Food TechnologyThis module is a study of the ingredients used and the principles of the processes involved in the production of the main foods produced by the Irish agricultural sector, milk, meat, cereals, fruit and vegetables. It involves a study of the processes used to preserve and maintain the quality of milk, meat, fruit, vegetables, cereal, fruit and vegetable products. It introduces students to some of the basic food technology concepts and unit operations required for working in the food industry and how food processing operations are controlled and monitored. Learning Outcomes 1. Recognise and label different types of equipment used for unit operations on food and be familiar with common unit operation parameters. |
