Course Overview
ATU Sligo is the co-ordinating provider of the Transport Operations & Commercial Driving Apprenticeship with the Freight Transport Association Ireland as the industry partner.
The Transport Operations and Commercial Driving Apprenticeship provides the academic qualification, practical training and work experience that supports a vibrant and exciting career in the freight distribution and logistics sector. Apprentices will receive expert driving lessons and training in advance of completing their C / CE driving test and attaining the Driver CPC qualification. On successful completion of the programme, apprentices will also receive a Higher Certificate in Business in Transport Services.
This programme consists of four semesters over two years and apprentices will study online from their place of work one day a week during term time. There will also be the option to attend two face-to-face group sessions per semester. Additionally, each student will be required to complete a minimum of 8-10 hours of personal study per week.
Some of the topics apprentices will study include Personal effectiveness and ICT skills, Supply chain management and Warehousing, Principles of professional driving, Customer care, Finance, Driver Health and Safety.
Apprentices will have the support of a work-based mentor who will guide and coach them throughout their studies. Mentors will receive training to help them to provide the support their apprentice needs. For more information on the programme for apprentices or employers please click here.

The Principles of Professional DrivingThis module will provide an overview of the principles of professional driving. There will be an introduction to the types of commercial vehicles, weight and dimensions limits in Ireland, types of trailers. Understanding the minimum requirements to drive such as driving license categories, and the requirement to be medically fit to drive will be covered. other basic principles to be considered will include the rules of the road in Ireland, speed limits, speed limit or requirements in trucks, Road Safety will be a focus of this module including information on driver behaviour and how it influences driving styles, the impact of fatigue on driving. This module prepares the apprentices for the Driver CPC initial Test stage one and two and support the application for the Learner Permit. Learning Outcomes 1. Demonstrate an understanding of the role of the professional driver for national and international distribution, the professional driver handbook and the drivers responsibilities while on the road, at delivery and collection points 2. State the types of Heavy Commercial Vehicles and their usage,weight limits and dimensions limits for trailers,rules of the road,speed limits for HCV on all categories of roads. 3. Identifythe various categories of driving licence, the application process for licence and the medical fitness to drive requirements for professional drivers 4. Intro to Supply ChainThis course will introduce students to the fundamentals of supply chains and key terminology. It will also examine the strategic importance of effective supply chain design, planning and operation for organisations. It focuses on the improvement of enterprise and supply chain performance and maximising customer value by leveraging technology in coordinating information and material flows, managing supplier relations and logistics, and forming strategic alliances with partners. Learning Outcomes 1. Demonstrate an understanding of key aspects and terminology used in the management of supply chains 2. Describe the strategic importance and differences in supply chain design, planning and operation. 3. Explain the importance of effective communication and information flow in improving supply chain performance and minimising waste and describe the key ICT that can enable this 4. Personal Effectiveness and ICT SkillsThis module is designed to introduce the learner to the Higher Education environment and to develop learning and study skills. The module will motivate the learner to develop a more independent, reflective and self-managed approach to study, learning, and time management while developing interpersonal skills for success in their professional career. This module will provide the learner with the skills to use a variety of computer applications in an efficient way. The module will introduce the learner to the basic components of a computer to allow them to understand how data is inputted and information is outputted. The learner on completion will have the skills to search for useful business information online, use email professionally, input data and output business information using word processing, spreadsheets and presentation software. This module will give the learner the confidence to use computer applications and will support the development of their analytical and problem-solving skills. The documents produced will be reflective of those used in the business environment, such as business letters, short reports, tabs, tables, business presentations and others. Learning Outcomes 1. Introduction to Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGV) Technology and Commercial Vehicle Roadworthiness TestingThis module introduces the learner to the basic construction, function and operation principles of the main components in a HGV and CVRT. On completion, the driver apprentice will gain a practical knowledge of modern heavy goods vehicle systems and technologies. Reflective ePortfolio Diary 1This module is designed to link academic learning with workplace learning and experience. The module relates to key aspects of transport operations that are covered in year 1 of the programme. This includes supply chain management, warehousing and distribution, driver health & safety, customer care, and aspects of business management such as Finance and ICT. The module is completed by the completion of a series of tasks designed to encourage reflection and active learning. This module provides an opportunity for enhanced work based knowledge and skills through case studies and assignments. These assignments are provided to apprentices with specific deadlines for completion and clear guidance for completing the tasks. They are overseen by the workplace supervisor who signs off on completion of the tasks prior to them being submitted to IT Sligo moodle page. Learning Outcomes 1. Identify ways in which key concepts presented in lectures can be applied in the workplace. 2. Demonstrate an understanding ofthe their own role in learning and reflection. 3. Driving Test Completion and CPC TrainingThe purpose of Driver Test & CPC Training is to set and maintain high standards of road safety, health, and safety and driving among professional drivers (those who drive for a living) of trucks. Learning Outcomes 1. Demonstrate the ability to drive safely, and competently. 2. Demonstrate an understanding andknowledge of topics such asrisk perception, eco-driving, hazard awareness and safe driving behaviour. 3. Health and Safety at Work / Work Related Vehicle SafetyThe Health and Safety Module is designed to provide apprentices with a comprehensive introduction to the Health and Safety requirements for working as a professional driver. This module will cover the legislation underpinning health and safety and safe workplaces in Ireland, with an emphasis on work-related vehicle safety. Apprentices will be introduced to employers' responsibility regarding health and safety under the Safety Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and subsequent regulations and gain an understanding of their obligations to ensure the safety of employees and contractors. Details of employees' responsibilities under the legislation will be covered. The contents of a safety statement and what is required for effective risk assessment with an emphasis on work-related vehicle safety will be covered. This module will also cover preventing vehicle-related slips, trips, and falls (Safe Access and Egress of the Vehicle). Delivering safely; weight distribution; the importance of a safe vehicle; carrying out daily vehicle inspections; typical hazards encountered on a daily basis; ergonomics; nutritional guidance for drivers; working from a height. Sustainable Transport Operations & TechnologiesThis module will introduce the learner to the new and emerging technologies in the area of driving technologies such as telematics, GPS sensors, autonomous vehicles, electric vehicles, and driver assisted systems etc. The learner will also be introduced to the impact of commercial vehicles and operations on the environment and the implications of replacing traditional engine and drive technologies with new and emerging modes. Policies will be introduced and discussion and debate encouraged on new paradigms of practice relating to sustainable driving, intelligent transport systems and traffic monitoring on the public road network. Progression
In developing this apprenticeship programme, attention was given to progression pathways as follows:
a) Transfer into the programme from cognate programmes, leading to awards at similar or higher NFQ levels, and the extent to which the possibility of transfer with advanced standing might apply.
b) Progression into the programme from cognate programmes leading to awards at lower NFQ levels.
c) Transfer or progression from the programme into cognate programmes leading to awards at similar or higher NFQ levels.
This qualification provides progression opportunities for graduates to other qualifications at higher levels on the NFQ in the areas of Business, Logistics, Project Management and Supply Chain Management, ensuring that graduates have a viable and rewarding career progression path. Graduates could also apply to progress to online programmes at ATU.

As this is a statutory apprenticeship, the minimum entry requirements will be verified for all applicants by a SOLAS authorised officer before registration with SOLAS. Once SOLAS has confirmed that the apprentice is eligible and registered with them, the apprentice will then be registered as a student of ATU.
