ATU offers Ireland's only BSc (Hons) in Digital Accounting with three CAP2 exemptions from Chartered Accountants Ireland

The speed of global technological developments has changed the business environment, and the role accountants undertake within this changing world. By studying Digital Accounting at ATU, professionals gain a competitive edge, enhance their skill sets, and are better prepared to meet the evolving demands of the accounting profession.

The programme recently gained an even further unique standing by becoming the only undergraduate degree programme in the country to achieve three Chartered Accountants Ireland CAP2 exemptions.

Deirdre Lusby, Head of Department of Business and Accounting, ATU Galway City commented:

“Achieving three CAP2 exemptions for this new fledgling programme is significant. Many people understand traditional accountancy programmes which involve the systematic recording, reporting, and analysis of financial transactions of a business. Traditional accounting degrees encompass financial reporting, auditing, and tax preparation, primarily using manual processes and physical documents. Digital Accounting leverages technology and software to perform the same tasks. It includes the use of digital tools, cloud-based platforms, and automation to manage financial data and processes. Our Digital Accounting programme is unique in the higher education and university setting, it’s a ‘one-of-a- kind’ programme, and to achieve the professional body recognition from Chartered Accountants Ireland further signifies the impact and potential the programme has for the learner.”

Deirdre further added: “More often, accountants are expected to add value and support decision making by integrating their financial knowledge with new evolving technologies, this has been one of the drivers in the development of this programme. Traditional accounting forms the basis of financial management, digital accounting represents the evolution of the field, incorporating technological advancements to improve efficiency, accuracy, and accessibility. Understanding both is crucial, mastering digital accounting positions professionals to better meet the demands of today's dynamic business environment. This is becoming more and more important in the business environment. We are thrilled to have received three CAP2 exemptions and are excited to develop and build on this unique standing.”

The first intake of Digital Accounting students commenced their studies at ATU Galway City in September 2023. 

Matiss Peterson joined the Digital Accounting programme in September and is thoroughly enjoying his time on the programme, he commented:

“I chose Digital Accounting because I am interested in all aspects of business. This programme offers a unique blend of accounting and IT, which I believe will stand out when seeking employment. Since transitioning from the leaving certificate to university, my interest in my studies has significantly increased. Taking some time off to work after the leaving certificate played a crucial role in this change. During that period, I developed a strong desire to learn, which has greatly enhanced my academic engagement. I am now more motivated and passionate about my studies, and I look forward to applying the knowledge and skills gained from this programme in my future career.”

Deirdre remarked: “Applicants applying to study the BSc (Hons) in Digital Accounting programme do not have to have studied business or accounting at leaving certificate to join this programme, often learners think this is a must or a pre-requisite, it isn’t an entry requirement and it’s important to highlight this point.”
