Atlantic Technological University (ATU) has been shortlisted for the prestigious National Age Friendly Recognition and Achievement Awards 2024 in the category of Age Friendly Active and Healthy Ageing Award.

The awards ceremony, hosted by Age Friendly Ireland Shared Service in partnership with Meath County Council celebrates innovative and creative initiatives across the country that have made a significant impact on the lives of Ireland’s older citizens.
Kate Brown, Lecturer in Applied Drama and Intergenerational Learning at ATU, leads the university's shortlisted project. Her work is a testament to ATU's commitment to fostering lifelong learning through intergenerational practice and supporting initiatives that enhance the lives of older people in Ireland.

"The intergenerational work at ATU is powered by the enthusiasm, commitment, and spirit of our older volunteers. Our volunteer group is led by Dr. Marie Hanmore-Cawley. Together, we aim to combat ageism and challenge the stereotyping of older and younger people through education and intergenerational learning collaborations. Intergenerational practice is about drawing on the knowledge and resources that each generation has to offer. This mutual sharing and learning help to build stronger, healthier and more connected communities. The Creative Generations Programme at ATU is for older people of all ages and abilities who would like to learn about and through intergenerational practice with university students, lecturers, and children.”

In preparation for the awards, the judges will be visiting each shortlisted project between 9 September and 1 October to evaluate the initiatives firsthand. The final winners will be announced at the Gala Dinner on 7 November 2024 in the Crowne Plaza, Northwood, Santry, Dublin, where representatives from each shortlisted project, including three members from ATU, will be invited to attend.
