This three-year degree produces graduates with a blend of business-related knowledge and skills. Our graduates leave with crucial expertise in core business areas. Individual and group projects are an integral part of the programme, which develops skills required for business, such as analysis, teamwork, presentation and professional business skills. This degree will position students for jobs at graduate entry level in business or the option to continue their studies in a broad range of business disciplines.
Overview
We focus on business, management, human resources, and finance skills. Students learn about enterprise development and understand how to maximise the use of IT for business effectiveness. Students are given a foundation of theoretical principles and are involved in various practical exercises. Individual and group projects are an integral part of the programme. Guest speakers give students an understanding of business practice in different organisational settings.
Our lecturers have the academic knowledge and industry experience to provide our students with a deep understanding of business practice across various industries and organisations. Together with guest speakers from industry, they tackle the most up-to-date trends and challenges facing businesses today. Work placement takes place in this degree’s final semester, allowing students to put the theory they have learned into a real-world setting.

Year 1
We equip our students with core business knowledge in areas such as Accounting Principles, Business Management, Marketing Principles, Business Mathematics, Information Technology Skills and Understanding the Dynamics of an Organisation.
Year 2
Students study core business areas at a more advanced level, with modules and practicals in Accounting, Business Management and Information Technology. Knowledge and understanding of key business disciplines expands by introducing Business Law, Economics, Management Accounting and Enterprise Development.
Year 3
Students study more advanced business topics in management, focusing on Operations, Human Resources Management, Marketing, and Finance. Work placement takes place in semester two of Year 3.
Graduates of the Level 7 degree can use the ladder system to progress to a Level 8 Bachelor of Business (Honours) degree at Atlantic Technological University or in other higher education institutions.
Students who come through the ladder system can have the same degree as those who start on the Level 8 Business degree. The duration is the same. Applicants are encouraged to put down all three levels on their CAO application to ensure their place on these highly sought-after programmes.

Politics for Business Students – Change and Transformation in Modern IrelandChallenging times require a robust political system. Students will examine central ideas, institutions ( e.g. visit to Country Council monthly meeting/ Dáil) and actors (e.g. TDs and MEPs invited as speakers) to enable a SWOT analysis of Irish Politics. How is power and authority translated into competing interests and what values drive political decision-making? Such key questions will be explored through real world situations. French Language, Culture and Contemporary Media 1.1This Module introduces and reinforces essential language skills while also introducing the cultures of Francophone societies. Through a combination of text-based material and contemporary media, the student will consolidate key language skills at this level and develop cultural awareness. On completion of the Semester, the student will move towards performing at Levels A1 – A2 within the CEFR Framework for Language Learning (Council of Europe Guidelines). The Module is open to students who have some years of French but a highly motivated beginner should be able to attain the level required on completion of the module. Through a combination of text-based material and contemporary media, the student will consolidate key language skills at this level and develop cultural awareness. What responsibility has business to society and vice-versa? Digital MarketingThe module will equip the learner with the practical skills to research, plan, create and publish both digital content and digital/social advertisements using popular PC and mobile applications. The learner will examine a number of popular social and digital platforms in order to evaluate which are best suited to the diverse audiences of today. Business Law 2In this module the learner will build on the knowledge acquired in Business Law 1. They will be introduced to some of the core principles and concepts which are essential in the commercial environment, including commercial contracts, employment law, consumer law and insurance. European Union Policies and InstitutionsThis module explores the development and practice of the European Union. Contemporary challenges in European Societies around for example climate change, ageing populations, digital revolutions, will be the focus for practical exercises, simulations and short role-play. The workings of the EU become clear through debate and negotiation in simulated EU Institutional meetings. This will allow students to analyse critically the issues facing this unique experiment in cooperation between European States. This will be an engaging way to learn about the European Union. Business Computer ApplicationsThis module is centred on using computers to capture and manage data efficiently and use that data to support effective decision-making in an organisation. The overall aim of the module is to give the learner the advanced skills required to utilise data effectively. The learner will therefore develop their analytical and digital literacy skills by building on their previous experience of computer applications to an advanced level. The learner will gain the advanced skills required to organise and analyse data using a spreadsheet application and use this data to produce reports that are reflective of those required in modern organisations. In addition to using advanced formulas and functions, this module covers visualisation of data through creating and formatting graphs or charts. The learner will also advance their experience of using databases and will create a database that reflects the needs of an organisation and be able to capture and extract data from a database that supports business decisions. European Affairs: Lobbying and Representation in the EULobbying at the EU level has increased substantially. This module explores the 'who', 'what', and 'why' of lobbying and representation at EU level. We will examine the key players – the EU Institutions, Trade Associations, Regional Governments, Non- Governmental Organisations and Business Groups. What strategies and influence do these actors exert on the policy and decision-making process of the EU? Simulated EU Commission, Parliament and/or Council of Ministers meetings are practical exercises to examine the reality of lobbying and how it impacts the democratic process. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Work PlacementThe primary objective of the work placement is to provide the student with broader skills and knowledge of the working environment. Furthermore, it will allow the student an opportunity to apply theoretical and practical knowledge gained during their programme of study to a work setting. It is a compulsory element in semester 6 and students go on work placement for a minimum period of 8 weeks. The student will not be eligible for an award until the placement has been successfully completed. The placement is supervised by tutors visiting the student at their place of work. The student must keep a weekly reflective diary of the work undertaken. A report from the company's student supervisor, based on the performance, is forwarded to the appropriate department in the Institute on completion of the placement. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Level 7 graduates may progress to Year 4 of AU900 Bachelor of Business (Honours) and complete one more year to graduate with an honours degree. Level 8 graduates may progress to Level 9 and Level 10 postgraduate studies in ATU Sligo or other third-level institutions.
Level 8 graduates may also pursue a Professional Master of Education (PME) to become a secondary school teacher of business.
