This programme is aimed at those working in or considering a career in business. The programme builds on learning obtained in the Higher Certificate in Business (Level 6 NFQ) and focuses on the practical skills and knowledge required to enhance performance in a business environment. Students will acquire the broad business skills that will enable them to obtain employment across a wide range of business environments at administrative or junior management entry level.
The programme is delivered online over one year. It consists of seven modules – four in semester one and three in semester two (including a dissertation). Modules are delivered online by professionally qualified and experienced business lecturers and cover the following business functions:
People Management
Business Information Systems
Financial Management and Control
Management
Economics
Please note that modules may change for your year of entry. The exact modules available and their order may vary depending on student demand and course updates.
Students will also have the opportunity to complete a minor dissertation which is preceded by research methods seminars.
The programme includes a significant amount of ongoing on-line assessment in each of the modules and for final written examinations students may have to attend at the ATU campus through which they completed their studies. For some programmes it may be possible for the Exam to be taken remotely via online proctoring. ATU Students resident in the Republic of Ireland will be invited to attend exams at an exam centre located in Ireland. Students resident outside of Ireland or with exceptional circumstances may be eligible to attend remotely via online proctoring, where examinations are taken online and supervised virtually, subject to availability.

People ManagementThis module is designed to provide students with a critical understanding of key people management processes and practices in order to equip students with skills in the functional area of Human Resource Management. Social Media and Digital ContentThe module will provide learners with a collection of resources to create and implement a Digital and Social Media Strategy for a business. The module will also enable learners to develop skills in Digital Media and Digital Marketing using Industry Standard Software, while also addressing the legal and ethical issues related to social and digital media for business. Financial Management and ControlThe aim of this module is to enable students to interpret the financial results of a small business, distinguish between profitability and liquidity and appreciate the need for financial planning; and to develop an understanding of the financial management methods used in appraising capital investment options and assessing appropriate sources of finance. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Explain the layout of financial statements and the terminology used. 2. Interpret the financial statements of a small business using ratio analysis 4. Apply the main principles of management accounting for planning, controlling and short term decision making. 7. Identify the principle sources of finance available to a business and appraise the suitability of the different sources in the context of an organisation’s financial requirements. |

ManagementThis module aims to provide students with an understanding of the issues and processes that constitute effective contemporary management practice. This module will outline constraints for todays managers along with current trends and issues which influence managers in carrying out the functions of management. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Display knowledge of organisation culture and the business environment and identify how they can be constraints for effective management practice. 2. Analyse the managers role as a decision maker and identify factors that influencethe decision making process. 3. Outline considerations for planning in a dynamic and changing environment 4. Analyse the importance of organisational structure, communication and change management as determinants of a successful organisation. 5. Economic SystemsThis subject aims to develop an appreciation of economic theory and its application to both the Irish and global economy. Furthermore, it aims to provide the student with an insight into the application of economic theory in everyday life. The module will provide the student with necessary analytical tools and vocabulary required to independently analyse and research constantly changing economic issues. Students are encouraged to take an active interest in economic related events as they occur. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Identify using demand and supply analysis equilibrium price and output levels 3. Examine in detail how economies function at a micro level including MU theory, cost,revenue and profit maximisation theory. 4. There is no attendance requirement for this programme. Students will receive a schedule for live online lectures in advance of the course start date (live lecturers will be scheduled for week nights only, Mon-Thurs).Applicants should hold a Level 6 Higher Certificate (previously called National Certificate) in Business (or cognate area). Applicants with other qualifications and with relevant work experience may also be considered through ATU Sligos Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) process. RPL is a process that may allow you to gain admission to a programme or to receive exemptions / credit from some parts of a programme based on demonstrated learning that you may have achieved through another programme of study or through your work and career. Former graduates are now working in the manufacturing, retail and public service; others have set up highly successful businesses. The programme is also an ideal base from which to progress to the Level 8 honours business qualification in ATU Sligo.
