ATU Donegal in collaboration with Monaghan Institute are offering students the chance to complete a Level 7 BSc in Health and Social Studies over two years. This is an exciting opportunity for people interested in progressing to a Level 7 award in Health and Social Studies.
* Please note that this degree is not CORU approved.
The course will consist of three days’ work placement/employment in a relevant area and two days attendance at classes onsite at Monaghan Institute weekly. This will enable students who are in employment to remain working, in a relevant field, while studying full time. As well as a placement element, each semester will cover a variety of modules over the two years including:

Practice Placement 1This module relates to supervised practice in a professional setting. The student will undertake a full semester or practice on a full-time or approaching full-time basis excluding additional training and reflective assignment time. This experience will enable the student to integrate theory with practice and to develop positive attitudes and values towards working with health and social care service users, colleagues, teams, and the wider community. Students must also complete mandatory People Moving and Handling training which is delivered by an approved external trainer. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Positive Ageing and CareThe aim of this module is to develop students’ holistic understanding of life course development and ageing in the context of a multi-cultural, diverse society faced with challenges such as climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic. The principle that there is no typical trajectory in human ageing is key to this module. The module includes practical training designed to equip students with a foundation in relevant skills for practice placement. The module is underpinned by current regulatory and legal frameworks, evidence-based practice, and the ethos of supporting clients as active participants in their care. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Health PromotionThis module aims to facilitate students to gain a deeper understanding of health, well-being, and health promotion. Learning is focused on enhancing students' local, national, and global understanding of public health patterns and the strategies in place to promote health and protect physical and mental health. It aims to enable students to develop the necessary knowledge and skills to design and deliver health promotion interventions, as well as developing their professional and personal qualities for engaging in such work. Responding to Behaviours of ConcernBehaviours of concern present among a wide range of client groups in the field of Health & Social Care. This module is designed to equip students with knowledge and understanding of the complexities of behaviours in social care environments. Students will acquire skills to work effectively with individuals who exhibit such behaviours in mental health, intellectual disability, residential and day services, in addition to developing critical thinking skills and self-reflection skills. Students will acquire an understanding of, and capacity to work within a human right, person-centred and trauma-informed framework. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Psychological Wellbeing and DistressThis module aims to develop learners' understanding of psychological well-being and mental health disorders. Learners will have the opportunity to examine social, cultural, psychological, and biological factors influencing mental health, cultural attitudes to mental health problems, and research contemporary interventions and supports. Social Care Work to Support Children & FamiliesThis module focuses on concepts of family studies, family support and family policy, exploring different family structures, the changing family, and the developing relationship. The work of the Child & Family Agency and multi-agency working in the wider social care sector are explored. Relevant psychosocial theories underpinning children and family support are explained, and students will develop a strong sense of relevant knowledge, skills and competencies needed for working in this sector. Climate Change and the Future of Youth & Community WorkThis module will help the learner to develop an appreciation of the nature of youth and community work at international, national, and local levels. The module will develop student's knowledge and understanding of the skills for working in a Health & Social Care capacity by focussing upon the different types of communities (past, present, and future). Climate change will be the key lens through which the key concepts of youthwork and community development, and the skills sets required in these sectors will be explored. Learners will be encouraged to examine the cultural influences that permeate their own communities and globalising communities; and to reflect on how these inform their skills in working with young people, and the wider community as a profession. Practice Placement IIThis module relates to the students' practice of professional Health and Social Care whilst on professional practice placement in a voluntary, statutory, or private sector Health and Social Care setting. The placement learning opportunity will take place at one or more locations under the auspices of one or more health and /or social care providers. The placement will be a minimum of 25 hours per week, or 30hrs per week total including the additional 5 hours per week for professional practice reflection time, normally over a semester. Whilst on supervised placement the student will be expected to link theory to practice, and where feasible implement learning experienced to date on the course, under supervision if required. In addition, the student will be expected to achieve professional standards in relation to their stage of training as defined by statutory oversight agencies and as detailed in the relevant assessment schedule. Students must also complete mandatory People Moving and Handling training that is delivered by an approved external training agency. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Learners who have completed a QQI Level 6 award in Applied Social Studies (or equivalent) or have sufficient experience in this area can apply through ATU Donegal Advanced Entry route to Year Two of the three-year Level 7 Health and Social Studies Degree (Course code: LY_VHSSM_D).
Garda Vetting
Non-Eu candidates will not be considered for this course unless there are still places available after all eligible EU candidates have been considered. Offerees are subject to garda vetting. Registration is temporary until garda vetting is successfully completed. Students who cannot complete garda vetting may be unable to go out on necessary placement or to fulfil course requirements. In such cases, students will be ineligible to complete registration & will be required to leave the course.
