This one year add-on course comprises the fourth year of the level 8 BSc (Hons) in Occupational Safety and Health. Applicants should have attained a relevant level 7 degree or equivalent.
This programme deals mainly with the management of occupational safety and health in the workplace. It provides practical opportunities to develop the skills and knowledge to manage workplace safety and health issues.
It has international recognition from the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) and qualifies graduates to manage the safety and health affairs within organisations both in Ireland and abroad.
Occupational Health and Safety is a critical area of responsibility in the modern workplace. This course will provide you with the knowledge and skills to protect workers from injuries and fatalities; prevent illness caused by work and promote health and wellbeing, advise employers on health and safety law and work in groups to solve workplace safety issues.

EHS Management Systems and AuditingThe aim of this module is to address the increasing requirement for OHS professionals to integrate occupational safety, health and environmental management in the workplace. The specific requirements of ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 will be detailed from initial status review to policy, planning, implementation, monitoring, auditing and review. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Examine the elements of the ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 management systems. 2. Assess the synergy between OSH and environmental management and the various stakeholders involved. 3. Integrate a knowledge of health and safety and environmental issues into EHS management. 4. Demonstrate a knowledge of best practice in auditing. 5. Behavioural Based Safety ProgramsThe aims of this module are to consider and evaluate behavioural based safety approaches in the workplace and to consider best practice in the development, delivery of these programs. ErgonomicsThis module examines the role of ergonomics in occupational loss control from the human factors perspective including the individual, the task and the organisation. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Analyse organisational failures inherent in accident causation. 2. Assess root cause factors and make recommendations for corrective actions. 3. Appraise the role of human factors in OSH loss. 4. Describe and justify ergonomic principles for safer, healthier and more efficient and effective activities in the workplace. 5. Evaluate and propose ergonomic interventions to manage OSH risks. |

Project Management for OSH professionalsThis module will look at the need for effective project management in occupational safety and health. The role of the leader along with the development of personal and professional skills will be explored to assist in the management of occupational safety and health in a professional environment. Analyse the stages in effective project management with particular reference to occupational safety and health activities 3. Regulatory AffairsThe aim of this module is to systematically explore the role of Regulatory Affairs in business management, covering Safe Product Design, Medical Device Directive, FDA regulations, GMP & CAPA, Machinery Directive & Food Safety Management Systems. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Examinethe role of Regulatory Affairs in relevant industriesfrom a product design, approval, process, liability and risk management perspective. 2. Recognise and apply the concepts of Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP), Corrective and preventive action (CAPA) as applied to a regulatedenvironment. 3. Examine product safety and regulatory requirements and develop a product liability prevention programme. 4. Analysethe requirements of the EU machinery directive, apply them to a machinery manufacturer andcarry outrelevant risk assessments. 5. Interpret and appraise Food Safety Standards in a manufacturing environment. |

Occupational Safety and Health Enquiry Based Learning 7 and Workplace StudiesThe theme of this Enquiry Based Learning module is work placement and Reporting Occupational Safety and Health Data. The aim of this module is to provide an opportunity for students to work in groups, integrating and applying technical health and safety knowledge to develop and defend managerial type solutions to simulated OSH problems. Students are expected to reflect on their work placement experiences and draw on the skills and the knowledge gained. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Training and DevelopmentThe purpose of this module is to enable the learner to acquire the knowledge, skill and competence to identify training and development needs and to deliver and evaluate a training intervention within a range of training and development contexts. This Level 8 module is the equivalent of the QQI Special Purpose Award in Training and Development 6S3372. This module has two components which are the equivalent of the QQI Special Purpose Awards in Training Delivery and Evaluation 6N3326 (Train the Trainer) and Training Needs Identification and Design 6N3325. Management of Workplace Health and WellbeingThis module will focus on the management principles and systems that impact on workers physical and mental health and wellbeing. During this module, students will gain a detailed knowledge and understanding of health and wellbeing management in a workplace setting. The learner will be able to identify and outline the core skills required to plan, implement and evaluate health promotion initiatives from a theoretical perspective. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Assess and manage health issues arising from exposure to physical, chemical, psychological and ergonomic hazards within the workplace. 2. Analyse and apply relevant legislative requirements in relation to the management of workplacehealth and wellbeing. 3. Design and implement appropriate workplacehealth and wellbeing management techniques to reduce riskwithin the organisation. 4. Compare and contrast the health and safety risks associated with different groups in the workplace setting, in particular; aging workers, young workers, female workers, migrant workers and shiftworkers. 5. OSH Enquiry Based Learning 8 -EHS Management Systems ProjectThe aims of this module is for final year students to engage with the work environment, acquiring and demonstrating professional competencies in the development of an EHS Management System. In this module, students work collaboratively integrating and applying their environmental, health and safety knowledge to conduct an initial review of EHS within the organisation. From this they will collaborate with management in designing and developing a bespoke work-based EHS management system for the company. Torthaí Foghlama 1.
