This programme has been designed in partnership with industry to meet the ‘Green Economy’ needs, which reports have projected to be a significant area of employment within the Irish economy. This broad-based level 7 degree programme emphasises construction principles and sustainable construction practices. It equips students with practical carpentry and joinery skills and an in-depth knowledge of sustainable building technologies and materials, including the retrofitting/refurbishing of existing dwellings to achieve a low-carbon design and the construction of new low-energy buildings.
The academic team at ATU stay ahead of the latest advancements in construction through regular contact with industry experts. As well as getting hands-on experience, students use the latest design software to construct real-life projects in our purpose-built, highly equipped workshops. The programme is delivered through a mixture of lectures and practicals. Students will also go on a work placement in Year 3. This is a great opportunity to put all the skills they have developed into real-world work experience.
Year 1
Introduction to the essential domestic building elements and construction methods, including Practical Carpentry & Joinery, Site Management, Information Communication Technology, Sustainable Construction Materials and Detailing, Graphical Communication and Design.
Year 2
Students better understand domestic building elements and construction methods, including Practical Building Construction, Passive and NZEB Construction, Building Services, Health and Safety, Measurement and Management and Building Information Modelling.
Year 3
Students continue their in-depth study of larger-scale building elements and construction methods in the final year. They include Practical Construction of Installations, Health & Safety, Project Planning, Design and Management of Facilities. Throughout the programme, real-life practical projects are used to reinforce the theory, culminating with a major practical project.
This programme is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), the largest construction body of its type.
A Female Student Network, has been established to help female students to settle into third level education and aid retention. This peer group operates within the Civil Engineering and Construction programmes at ATU Sligo.

Applied Construction Technology 1This workshop-based module will provide the student with an ability to identify and demonstrate various jointing techniques and apply the correct use and maintenance requirements of basic tools and equipment. It will also provide the student with the opportunity to learn, practice and develop the skills to set out, mark out and construct carpentry joinery work. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Principles of ConstructionLearners will gain a clear understanding of the design and construction processes commonly used in the industry. This module aims to: Introduce the building regulations that are relevant to planning, design and construction. Graphical Communication & CAD 1This module is intended to develop design and communication skills. The module provides the student with skills to produce detailed and accurate working drawings using standard rules of Draughtsmanship. It will also give the student the ability to create two-dimensional orthographic views from three-dimensional objects and produce auxiliary views from these views. The module will provide students with a solid foundation in 2 Dimensional CAD skills. The student will have an understanding of the complexity of graphical communication. They will be able to select and use the most appropriate media/medium of communication to present simple design ideas. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Effectively communicate a design concept using the appropriate medium. 2. Create detailed and accurate working drawings using standard rules of Draughtsmanship. 3. Surveying 1This module is designed to give students a comprehensive understanding of the principles and methodology of conducting a site survey using basic surveying equipment. Students are introduced to automatic and rotating laser levels and their respective applications in conducting site, foul/storm water sewer, cross-sectional surveys and related applied site uses. Domestic Construction TechnologyThis module introduces students to the construction elements of small domestic buildings including internal/external walling, upper floors/stairs, roofs, completions and finishes. It gives students the skills and vocabulary necessary to apply the knowledge to describe and quantify a small domestic building. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Graphical Communication & CAD 2This module is intended to develop design and communication skills. The module provides the student the ability to create and interpret section views projected from two-dimensional orthographic views. Students will also gain the ability to find the true shape of surfaces through development and also find the lines of intersection between intersecting objects. The module will provide students with a comprehensive knowledge of 2Dimensional CAD drawing methods. The student will have an understanding of the complexity of graphical communication. They will be able to select and use the most appropriate media/medium of communication to present complex design ideas. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Effectively communicate through visual, verbal and written presentations, utilising appropriate language, terminology and representational graphics. 2. Create and interpret section views projected from two dimensional orthographic views. 3. Correctly find the true shape of surfaces of basic three dimensional objects through development. 4. Surveying 2This module is designed to build on the knowledge gained in Surveying 1 and give students a competence in the surveying of a parcel of ground, processing of the data collected, the planning application for a dwelling designed in an interdisciplinary module on that site and the set-out associated with the construction of that dwelling. The scope of the Practical element of the module will be in relation to domestic application with industrial and commercial application discussed in theory lectures. Student will employ the use of field tapes, electronic theodolites and total stations to compare and contrast their specific benefits and limitations. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Applied Construction Technology with Advanced Manufacturing 1This workshop‑based module develops on the skills acquired during the students first year of study to an advanced standard in construction related applications of carpentry, joinery and appropriate manufacturing technologies. The student is introduced to additional machinery and techniques in the completion of their continuous assessment projects linked to their theory and technology studies. Torthaí Foghlama 1. This project will combine multi-disciplinary elements of Information Technology, Construction Technology, Computer Aided Design, Health and Safety Management modules together with the students previous 3-semesters of Applied Technology module to allow them research, design, schedule and construct a project of significance. ICT for ConstructionThis module is designed to further develop the students proficiency in Information and Communications Technology. Individual and collaborative student assignments, presentations and reports will be covered to prepare the student for communicating their concepts and ideas in a comprehensive manner using Microsoft Office 365. Case studies will be used to demonstrate report writing, presentation skills, the ability to incorporate worksheet calculations in the students assignments and the skills to produce surveys using online applications. Industrial Buildings – Construction TechnologyThe module will introduce students to multi-storey and long-span industrial buildings and the identification of project-specific solutions. The student will examine and learn about the various forms of substructure common to these types of buildings. They will take the building out of the ground through the use of differing framed construction methods, continuing with various types of internal flooring systems. The learner will continue up the building and be introduced to the many forms of roofing and cladding utilised in the construction of industrial buildings and how different materials, systems and legislation are used to provide fire protection to these structures. Students will also learn how technology can influence the comfort of humans within the built environment, through the application of environmental science. Learners will also develop an understanding of the application of Passive House Design concepts for Non-Domestic Buildings. The learner will recognise how different end users affect the loading on building elements. The student will be in a position to provide a research report which demonstrates the student's ability to carry out research and critically evaluate strategies, trends and emerging issues and technologies associated with high-rise constriction projects. Building Analysis and AdaptationThis module will enable the student to perform a building inspection and building defect analysis, develop an understanding of the management and methods used for the adaptation and maintenance of existing buildings and develop an understanding of the parameters that define a buildings overall energy efficiency. It will provide the student with an understanding of the measures for improving energy efficiency as well as reducing pollution and waste in the adaptation of existing buildings. This module will also apply the principles of Passive House Design Concepts for a typical retrofit solution. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Perform a building inspection and building defects analysis. 2. Commercial Buildings – Construction TechnologyThis module aims at providing the learner with an understanding of the elements involved in the construction of commercial, multi-storey buildings, paying particular attention to modern methods, such as; Lean Construction, Lean Project Delivery, Modular Construction, Offsite Construction, Just in Time deliveries etc. The student will learn about and report on Construction Elements, such as; Cladding types, Gluelam beams, Internal wall systems, Lift shafts, Parapets, Raised access floors, Roof lights, Stairs (Precast / in-situ, completions and finishes), Suspended ceilings etc. They will compliment this with; Multi storey Frames, Roofing Systems and finishes, decoration, fittings and fit -out. The learner will explore Sustainable Construction and the environmental impact of design and development, examining how the implementation of Environmental Science during these phases provides an an understanding of the underlying principles and the influencing factors associated with the design decision. Undertake research and report on how sustainable construction is affected, the environmental impact of differing construction elements and roofing systems, examining the factors that influence their inclusion in commercial and multi-storey buildings. |

Construction Planning and ManagementThis module aimed at developing the students capabilities involving the planning and programming of construction work. This will include Site Planning and Management, Production Planning and Control. The student will develop the knowledge and skills required to plan and control construction work activities and develop an understanding of the management responsibilities involved. BIM CollaborationThis module will provide students with the knowledge and skills to create, operate and manage a fully coordinated BIM model. The module will provide students with the ability to work collaboratively in a BIM environment. The module will provide an understanding of the BIM process and standards required for successful delivery of a BIM level 2 project. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Work PlacementThis module will introduce the learner to the practical world of Construction and on-site construction management and practices. It provides the learner with the opportunity to integrate the knowledge and skills gained throughout the programme in an appropriate work-place setting. Students on this programme may be placed with; building contractors, specialist sub-contractors, local authorities etc. While on work placement learners will be required to participate in a range of construction projects and contribute significantly to the various project activities and outputs, whilst demonstrating that they can work effectively with and contribute to the construction team. The objective of the work placement is to develop and foster the following key skills; commercial awareness,interpersonal skills, maturity, problem-solving skills, self-confidence, self-reliance, teamwork and practical skills Where it is not possible to secure a work placement for a learner, an alternative of an industry related project will be available addressing the same learning outcomes. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Apply knowledge and practical skills gained through the academic programme to onsite work within the construction industry 2. On completion of the BSc (Hons) in Construction Project Management and Applied Technology or the BSc (Hons) in Construction Project Management (add-on), graduates may progress to our Level 9 MSc in Project Management.

Gairmeacha
The broad nature of the programme allows graduates to assume positions of appropriate responsibility in a cross section of specialised domains within the built environment, while also allowing them to specialise in an area of choice in further education at Level 8 honours degree.
Graduates of this programme are prepared for employment with building contracting organisations, architects, quantity surveyors and local authorities in areas such as retrofitting existing building stock, BER certification, preparation of working drawings and specifications, surveying and site setting out, building surveying, defect analysis and construction planning.
To date the majority of graduates from this programme continue on to complete an honours degree and now work as building contractors, construction project managers, site supervisors, fire safety engineers, site managers and architectural technicians.
Graduates are also ideally placed to take advantage of the growing opportunities in the construction sector nationally and internationally. Our construction graduates are highly sought after as our programmes have a strong reputation within industry.
