This module will afford Learners the opportunity to learn about post and beam buildings and structural materials to reinforce the students parallel studies in the Construction Technology and Structural Design and Materials modules. The application of Building Regulations relating to Accessibility will also be studied.

The module aims to develop the learner’s ability to produce construction and presentation information in digital & graphical form, including 2D and 3D technical and construction drawings using freehand and manual drawing techniques, colour theory and model making together with buildin g information modelling and r endering photo realistic software applications.

This module in conjunction with the Architectural Project 3 Module will teach the learner the principles of Post and Beam Construction in medium span buildings with an emphasis on the structural regime and how the properties of Timber Steel and Concrete as structural materials inform detail design proposals. The module continues with an overview of the Assembly and Specification of roofing components for medium span non-domestic construction.

This module will introduce the learner to the use of materials in construction and their properties. The learner will complete some laboratory testing of materials and report writing. The learner will also be introduced to basic structural analysis, design of building elements.

Part A of this module will enable learners to understand the principles and theories of architecture, building technology, and developments of distinct Architectural movements, through the study of significant building forms from earliest civilisations to the present day.

Part B of this module aims to ensure learners can assess the requirement for a conservation approach to an existing building and the requirements under planning regulations for protected structures. Learners will prepare details for the restoration / retrofit of period buildings to comply with conservation principles and standards.

This module will afford the opportunity to develop their Architectural Technology skills as part of a simulated 'Design / Project Team' by collaborating with students from the other Engineering Department Faculties, including Civil Engineering, Fire Engineering, Building Services, Quantity Surveying and Construction Management. The learner will be required to prepare Drawings and Documents of a Planning Application submission.

1. Generate scaled orthographic drawings from a completed 3-Dimensional Revit Model.
2. Specify materials and apply principles of the design of the structural frame and assembly of the external envelope.
3. Prepare detailed proposals for the building which comply with Building Regulations and which will also deliver the aesthetic quality of the building being studied. ( sufficient to support a Planning Application.)
4. Prepare a Planning Application which would pass a Local Authority Planning Department Validation assessment / checklist.
5. Distinguish b etween Planning and W orking drawings and develop a greater understanding of the role of the Architect / Architectural Technologist within a Design Team.
6. Participate in a BIM level 2 collaborative environment and be aware of the roles and responsibilities of each member of the Project Team as part of the procurement of a Building using Building Information Modelling Level 2 & 3.

This module will further develops the learners knowledge of mechanical and introduces the science and technology of electrical services engineering. It places a particular emphasis on the role of energy efficient, and renewable engineering services in the built environment.

This module looks at the external envelope of Post & Beam Buildings in more Detail. Windows, Curtain Walling, Structural Glass Technology and various external wall cladding systems are examined in more detail for Public Buildings.

This module will discuss and compare the role of various construction professionals within a construction project, and explain the construction process from drawing office to site . It will examine specific aspects of the construction industry such as contracts, scheduling, site safety, and mechanical plant.

This module explores the use of Building Information Modelling and the BIM process in the effective design and delivery of construction projects. The first part of the module concentrates on the preparation of a 3D BIM of a domestic and commercial building. The second part of the module involves a project based curriculum focused on the succeeding dimensions of BIM such as 4D clash detection, 5D quantity take-off and 6D energy modelling.

This module develops the learners knowledge and skills to assess and improve the efficiency of resource use in an organisation to the benefit of the organisation and the environment. A combination of theoretical and practical problem based learning are used to develop practical energy solutions to real life building application.

This module will introduce the learner to the fundamentals of both passive and active fire protection. It will develop the learners understanding of fire safety engineering design, fire growth and its development. Finally, it will assist the learner in applying the practical application of fire safety to building construction.

2. Calculate solutions for theoretical fire resistance, and equivalent fire severity.
3. Analyse the factors influencing enclosure fire development, spread and resulting severity.

As building information modelling (BIM) becomes established in the architectural, engineering and construction (AEC) industry, learners need to understand and apply management and BIM concepts and skills. The objective of this module is to provide a collaborative BIM project experience for Construction Management students as they work in teams with students from other engineering and construction courses in the department.

This module will develop learner's skills and competencies in land surveying, both field and office work . The learner will apply the principles of digital surveying techniques with the use of total station and GPS systems.

3. Compute setting out data from a design and set out structure using available equipment.
4. Critically evaluate the use of land surveying technologies for surveying and setting out .

This module aims to develop a sound understanding of the role of the consultant in society, the construction industry and the project team . It will equip the learner with knowledge and skills to facilitate their ethical and effective contribution to their chosen profession through consideration of management and communication issues and tools/techniques . The contractual and legislative context for the design consultant will be explored.

1. Set out the role of the consultant in society and wider construction industry and the set up of a professional office , and r ecognise the commercial imperative for it to operate effectively .

This module develops an understanding and application of the principals of retrofit and best practice energy upgrading in the conservation of existing buildings. Learners will research relevant legislation, building standards and current construction technologies before they critically appraise their proposals and develop detailed assembly drawings and digital models.

This module will develop the learners' knowledge of the construction process to address conservation of energy. The current NZEB regulations are a benchmark with higher Passive House/EnerPHit standard being applied also. This module will enable learners to focus on embodied energy of materials and processes, lean construction principles as well as operational energy consumed post occupancy. New and Retrofit projects will be undertaken where students will differentiate between specific concerns/requirements and the standards that apply.

1. Evaluate appropriate technologies & materials suitable for new dwellings the upgrading of existing buildings  .
2. Appraise how energy is used in construction and perform calculations on embodied energy and operational use. Carry out an energy assessment of a domestic building  .

This module aims to provide the learners with the opportunity to study legislation pertaining to the building procurement process from Project Inception to Project Completion. Focusing on the roles and responsibilities of the Client, the Design Team and the Construction Team as they are defined by the applicable legislation.

1. Outline the mechanisms of the Irish State as defined in Bunreacht na hireann which enables the design, implementation and enforcement of Legislation associated with the building procurement journey .
2. Summerise the historical context and aspirational intent of the Legislation an d associate d statutory requirements relating to Planning, Building Control , Building Regulations & Health and Safety which will arise in the procurement process for new buildings, extended buildings or renovated and refurbished buildings.
3. Search and identify the applicable legislation at each stage of the project procurement Journey.

The aim of this module is to develop the learner's capacity to identify the issues related to research within the construction/property sector, to extend the learner's research capability and provide the learner with practical knowledge of the tools and techniques of research.

1. Select a relevant research topic. (Selecting a subject matter within the construction industry and identify an area of interest, evaluating the various research alternatives to identify a definable research topic, and finally refining the research topic to develop the research aim).
2. Write and present a research proposal based on the selected research topic. (The research proposal should clarify the research aim, strategic objectives to achieve the research aim, refer to the research hypotheses, and explain in detail the methodology to be employed. The research proposal should also include timetable/deliverables).
3. Assemble a theoretical framework for the research by preparing a literature review (s). (The review(s) should provide for the critical and systematic review of theory and previous study to establish the appropriate bases for the current research topic).
4. Use appropriate methodological techniques to conduct empirical research.
5. Write, present and defend material that articulates ideas, insights, analysis, policy and best practice to peer and practitioner audiences.

This module introduces the principals of modern methods of construction and its application in medium to large scale construction projects. Learners will propose solutions to specific design challenges which may include low carbon construction, modular construction and designing for reuse before preparing detailed assembly drawings and digital models. Learners may undertake a study tour of a European city visiting historical buildings of note and contemporary award winning Architecture.

The aim of this module is to introduce the learner to the theory and method odo g y of Specification & T endering . The module will allow the learner to understand how these activities are sequenced into and overall project procurement journey and will allow t he learner to develop th eir skill in defining building component & preliminary s pecificat ions .

2. Identify the various types of procurement arrangements.
3. Identify the stages in preparing and assessing tender documents.
4. Interpret tendering procedure guidelines.
5. Identify the types and uses of specifications in relation to contract types.

The aim of this module is to facilitate the learner to produce an academically acceptable independent piece of research. Learners will develop the capacity to clarify and critically analyse well defined research topic areas and will present and defend their research through their dissertation report and presentation.

1. Construct an appropriate research methodology to validly investigate a research topic.
2. Develop a context for the research by reviewing relevant literature. This review should be collated, assessed, and critically analysed in the context of the research aim.
3. Clearly present and explain an argument/opinion in a logically well referenced fashion.
4. Use appropriate methodological techniques to conduct empirical research.
5. Produce a self directed , realistic and original document on time.
