This course allows professionals from a range of construction backgrounds to focus their skills and knowledge into much needed expertise in construction contracts management, embracing the new forms of government contract (GCCC), RIAI, Design /Build contracts and on-line procurement methods while creating expertise in the administration and management of contracts.

Construction Management 1This module recognises that learners will have been introduced to many construction management principles . It aims to build on these through further learning and with a strong focus on practical application through project simulation, teamwork and other analytical exercises . It is a 100% Continuous Assessment module with submissions required throughout, reflecting real life project/professional submissions . It will focus primarily on the pre-contract project phases. Statutory ApprovalsThis module aims to provide the learners with the opportunity to study legislation pertaining to the building procurement process from Project Inception to Project Completion . While considering the overall thrust of Planning, Building control and Health & safety Legislation the module will particularly focus on the roles and responsibilities of the Client, the Design Team and the Construction Team as they are defined by the applicable legislation. Outline the mechanisms of the Irish State as defined in Bunreacht na hireann which enables the design, implementation and enforcement of Legislation associated with the building procurement journey . |

Construction Management 2This module is a continuation from the construction management 1 principles. It aims to build on these through further learning and with a strong focus on practical application through project simulation, teamwork and other analytical exercises. It is a 100% Continuous Assessment module with submissions required throughout, reflecting real life project/professional submissions. It will focus primarily on the post-contract stage of a project however certain pre-contract stages will also be addressed. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Assimilate construction-based information and develop a management programme for post contract administration . The BIM environment will be considered, and project management approaches will be influenced by the ethos of lean design and construction. |

Construction Law & Professional EthicsThis module will provide a fundamental understanding of the sources of law and the legal framework in Ireland and , in particular, the effect and influence they have on the construction industry . Learners will also investigate the ethical and societal issues pertaining to the construction profession. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Examine the principal purpose and scope of Irish law and how it interconnects with the construction industry. |

Financial Information for Decision Making in ConstructionThis Financial Information and decision making module is designed to enable learners to develop/enhance their understanding and to make constructive contributions to the effective financial management of a business enterprise within the construction industry. In doing so, they will enhance/develop a sound working knowledge of the various concepts, principles and techniques from the disciplines of management and business finance as they apply to the construction industry. Examine the context in which investment and financing decisions are typically made within construction related industries and examine macro-economic factors, such as taxation, availability of finance and interest rates which influence these decisions. |

Dispute Mitigation and ResolutionThe aim of this module is to provide students a hands-on understanding in dispute management in the construction industry . Through experience-based learning in role plays and formal lectures by industry experts, leaners will develop skills in dispute mitigation and alternative dispute resolution (ADR) processes. Research ReportThis module develops the learners ability to undertake research by introducing practical tools and techniques. Learner's will select and refine a research topic relevant to the construction industry, review and cite appropriate literature to build a research aims, objectives and research questions. In addition to applying their research methodology and analysing findings, learners will write, present and defend their research process and findings in a written report and presentation. (Selecting a subject matter within construction contracts and identify an area of interest, evaluating the various research alternatives to identify a definable research topic, and finally refining the research topic to develop the research aim). |

Industry Case StudyThe aim of this module is to encourage the learner to engage with industry, the construction industry, by way of a case study. The module activities will allow the learner to further develop their research and academic writing skills and will allow integration of assessments with other modules in the semester. Work PlacementLearners will research placement opportunities, prepare for interviews as required, and complete pre-placement training. During the placement, they will apply knowledge and skills gained from formal study and improve teamworking abilities while gaining insight into the construction industry generally. Throughout the placement period, learners will develop their reflective learning techniques and reflect on their experiences, identifying key areas for professional growth and best practice. Applicants must have successfully completed a Bachelor of Science/ Bachelor of Engineering (level 7) qualification with 180 ECTS credits and appropriate learning outcomes in a construction technology or related discipline.
Applications are invited from graduates of a level 7 (or above) degree in Construction Technology, Civil Engineering, Building Services Engineering or Architectural Technology.
RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) both certified or experiential may be taken into account.

The programme is fully accredited by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).

Graduate careers are typically in the construction sector and include roles such as Construction Manager and Contracts Manager.
