This four-year BSc (Hons) in Mental Health Nursing offered in conjunction with HSE West and the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI), has been developed in response to the changing mental health needs of the Irish population. The role of the mental health nurse is to foster the health and well-being of individuals experiencing changes in their mental health status. All places offered in this programme are subject to satisfactory Garda vetting clearance and health screening.
People with mental illness are cared for in many different places, such as hospitals, hostels, day centres, the community and in their own homes. We want to promote positive attitudes to mental health and to help people deal with any mental/emotional challenges they face in life.
What is great about this programme is that you will learn in so many different environments such as in the classroom, in a simulated community based apartment and on work placement.
A particularly important part of your learning experience will be improving how you relate to people so that you can communicate with people with mental health challenges and form healing relationships with them and their families.
Students have work placement each year, and in the fourth year, you will undertake a thirty-six-week paid internship, where you will gain more valuable practical experience. We also give you time each week to take time out from work to think and reflect on your work experience.
Work placement takes place in various home, residential and community settings throughout the Mayo/Roscommon region in conjunction with Mayo Mental Health Services. Opportunities may also exist for students to avail of placements outside of these areas e.g. Dublin. Students may have to make alternative living arrangements when they are on placement. There is an external clinical placement allowance available for students who are placed outside the parent site (i.e. Castlebar) to help with expenses like rent.
Exit awards after two or three years of study may be available to students who wish to exit the programme early and who achieve the necessary grades.
