The Level 7 B.Sc. in Property Services and Facilities Management is a degree programme offered via on-line distance learning over a period of 2 years part time. The programme which has been developed in partnership with and is fully accredited by the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland (SCSI) is specifically designed to enable industry professionals including; Estate Agents, Property Managers, Facilities Managers / Co-Ordinators, Maintenance Supervisors, or other qualified level 6 property and facilities industry professionals gain a level 7 qualification. The Institute of Professional Auctioneers and Valuers (IPAV) have also accredited this programme. An important feature of this programme is that when completed and combined with the completion of the Level 8 BSc (Hons) in Real Estate Development and Valuation (https://www.itsligo.ie/courses/bachelor-of-science-honours-in-real-estate-development-and-valuation-online/), the Property Services Regulatory Authority will accept your application for the PSRA A, B, C & D licences.
The programme prepares graduates to assume technical and management level positions within the property and facilities management industry.

Property Sales, Lettings and MarketingThe aim of this module provides comprehensive knowledge of services offered by estate agents with particular emphasis on property sales, lettings and marketing. It is designed to provide the learner with an in-depth knowledge of the role and duties of the estate agent. The module explores the various methods of sale as well as the policies and procedures that the agent is required to follow for good practice. A comprehensive understanding of the essential marketing documentation required in the process of sale or letting of any property. This module will outline the office administrational duties of the day-to-day operations of a property firm. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Identify and appraise the roles and duties of the estate agent. 2. Project Feasibility and AppraisalThis module gives the learner an overview of project appraisal and its use in the construction industry. It examines the critical process of decision-making and its position in the project planning process. This module will introduce the student to various methods used for engineering project feasibility and appraisal, with particular emphasis on; Net Present worth, Equivalent Annual Worth and Minimum Rate of Return techniques. Appraise the various decision-making models and evaluate their use in the construction industry. 3. Evaluate the project planning process relative to the construction industry. 4. Demonstrate a knowledge of analysing, evaluating and apprising of proposed project options by using the main economic appraisal techniques. |

Introduction to Planning and DevelopmentThis module is an introductory course in planning and development. The syllabus is broad in scope and practical in nature. It provides students with an understanding of key principles in planning as well as the key features of the Irish planning system. The aim of this module is to provide the students with a knowledge of the practice and procedures of the Irish Planning System and the appeals process. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Investment ValuationsThe aim of this module is to build on the learners understanding of valuation principles and their application. The module will focus on Investment Valuations and illustrate the appraisal of such valuations. On completion of this module the learner will have the knowledge to assess investment valuations, identify the variables, carry out an investment valuation and make recommendations on same. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Demonstrate an understanding of investment valuations and the variables in the process. 2. Analyse Investment comparables and incorporate them in the valuation process. 3. Develop and prepare a leasehold valuation 4. Apply valuation methodology as appropriate to varying situations. 5. Construct a discounted cash flow analysis of a property investment to obtain the Net Present Value and the Internal Rate of Return in respect of that investment. |

Commercial Real Estate Mgmt and LeasesThe aim of this module is to provide the learner with an in-depth knowledge of property management practice to enable them to enter a role as a Property Manager. Capstone Project – Property DevelopmentThis module is designed as a total problem based learning experience to develop students' critical thinking, analytical, ethical and problem solving skills required of property professionals working in a modern, complex built environment. Fundamentals of Measurement and Cost ControlThis module will introduce learners to the range of services provided by Quantity Surveyors to Property Owners and Building Contractors. Background information will be provided for the development of core Quantity Surveying skills including mensuration applications and elemental measurement. Learners will be introduced to the steps involved in the effective cost management of a typical Construction Project at both the pre and post contract stages. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Recognise the contribution that Quantity Surveyors can make to the successful outcome of Construction projects and appreciate the concept of value for money and the importance of cost control in construction projects. 2. Apply appropriate mensuration formulae, measure building elements in accordance with the Agreed Rules of Measurement (ARM4). 3. Demonstrate the principles to be observed for taking off quantities from design drawings. 4. Identify and distinguish the various pre-contract cost planning stages. 5. Building ServicesThis Module provides an introduction to M&E, HVAC and drainage building services technology and building systems. It will provide learners with some understanding of building services technology within the built environment. This module aims to further develop and deepen the learner's understanding of the building services elements and components which combine to complete an efficient and functioning building. This includes an understanding of the relationship between the architectural and civil engineering disciplines and the building services discipline. It will provide the learner with an awareness of the range of options best suited to the building's use and for end-user comfort. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Assess and explain the functions, principles and environmental constraints of services in buildings. 3. Industrial Buildings – Construction TechnologyThe module will introduce students to multi-storey and long-span industrial buildings and the identification of project-specific solutions. The student will examine and learn about the various forms of substructure common to these types of buildings. They will take the building out of the ground through the use of differing framed construction methods, continuing with various types of internal flooring systems. The learner will continue up the building and be introduced to the many forms of roofing and cladding utilised in the construction of industrial buildings and how different materials, systems and legislation are used to provide fire protection to these structures. Students will also learn how technology can influence the comfort of humans within the built environment, through the application of environmental science. Learners will also develop an understanding of the application of Passive House Design concepts for Non-Domestic Buildings. The learner will recognise how different end users affect the loading on building elements. The student will be in a position to provide a research report which demonstrates the student's ability to carry out research and critically evaluate strategies, trends and emerging issues and technologies associated with high-rise constriction projects. All this will take into account current building and health and safety legislation. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Differentiate between, then compare and contrast, construction details in relation to the functional requirements of industrial buildings. 3. Demonstrate a knowledge of, formulate and provide advice on; sub-structures, cladding, internal flooring and roofs for industrial buildings. 5. Compare and contrast the different materials; steel, concrete, timber and how they are used in industrial frames. |

Building SurveyingThis module covers the prevention, recognition and diagnosis of construction defects. It provides an understanding of their causes, including making recommendations for suitable remediation work. It covers the procedures in carrying out building surveys and compiling reports. It also includes a focus on building energy efficiency, including upgrading and retrofitting to low energy and passive standards, BER, U Value calculations, thermal bridging detailing and airtightness strategies and detailing. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Produce a well constructed building survey report of abuilding. 2. Diagnose the causes of structural and non-structural defects in existing buildings and make recommendations for remediation works. 3. Demonstrate an awareness of the suitability and potential lifespan materials and details used in buildings and advise on maintenance requirements to prolong lifecycle. 4. Identify poor designs, details, site practices andworkmanship on site for construction projects, describe the potential resulting defects thereof and advise on the most cost effective alternatives. 5. Calculate elemental U values, devise airtightness strategies, calculate BER ratings for buildings and advise ofretrofitting solutions forbuilding energy upgrades to Passive and NZEB standards. |

Commercial Buildings – Construction TechnologyThis module aims at providing the learner with an understanding of the elements involved in the construction of commercial, multi-storey buildings, paying particular attention to modern methods, such as; Lean Construction, Lean Project Delivery, Modular Construction, Offsite Construction, Just in Time deliveries etc. The student will learn about and report on Construction Elements, such as; Cladding types, Gluelam beams, Internal wall systems, Lift shafts, Parapets, Raised access floors, Roof lights, Stairs (Precast / in-situ, completions and finishes), Suspended ceilings etc. They will compliment this with; Multi storey Frames, Roofing Systems and finishes, decoration, fittings and fit -out. The learner will explore Sustainable Construction and the environmental impact of design and development, examining how the implementation of Environmental Science during these phases provides an an understanding of the underlying principles and the influencing factors associated with the design decision. This module further aims to develop and deepen the learner's understanding of the building services elements and building components which combine to complete an efficient and functioning building. This includes an understanding of the relationship between the architectural and civil engineering disciplines and the building services discipline. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Identify, examine, then compare and contrast traditional and modern construction methods, with respect to Modular Construction, Offsite Construction, Just in Time deliveries and construction sustainability. 4. Recognise the need for and assess the technologies and systems involved in multi storey Frames, structural glazing, non-metal cladding options and the various roofing system 5. Undertake research and report on how sustainable construction is affected, the environmental impact of differing construction elements and roofing systems, examining the factors that influence their inclusion in commercial and multi-storey buildings. |

This programme has been developed in parallel with two new related Level 8 programmes. It is a natural progression for students who have completed ATU Sligo’s Level 6 Certificate in Property Services and Facilities Management and provides students with the academic foundation required and a progression pathway to undertake the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Facilities and Building Services Management (Online) or the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Real Estate Development and Valuation (Online).

For candidates without level 6 qualifications, a process of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) can be undertaken to assess the candidates suitability to the course. Applicants with other qualifications and with relevant work experience may also be considered through ATU Sligos Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) process. RPL is a process that may allow you to gain admission to a programme or to receive exemptions / credit from some parts of a programme based on demonstrated learning that you may have achieved through another programme of study or through your work and career. As such there are now synergies between Property Services in particular Agency, Valuations and Management, and Facilities Management and Building Services. Life cycle costings and energy management are now crucial for clients, due to climate change and environmental targets for companies.Graduates of the programme will typically be involved in facility management, property management (residential / commercial / retail), service providers to industry (pharmaceutical / tech) or public sector employees involved in hospital / OPW / local authorities / social housing / education facilities etc.
