Our Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Nursing is a three-year course that will prepare you for a career in the veterinary field. You’ll be qualified to work closely with veterinary surgeons in diagnosing and treating animals suffering from a range of medical issues.Veterinary science is one of the most popular and fascinating fields of medical science. This course – that is fully accredited by the Veterinary Council of Ireland – will teach you different aspects of science, clinical and surgical nursing, animal husbandry, ethics and laboratory management. You’ll also learn about veterinary practice management and communication skill. It’s a course with a strong emphasis on practical skills and involves a six-week placement in each semester in a veterinary environment. After graduating you’ll be able to pursue an exciting and challenging career in private veterinary practices, animal welfare organisations and veterinary hospitals as a registered veterinary nurse, animal behaviourist or veterinary pharmaceutical sales specialist.

Introduction to NursingThis module will introduce the learner to the role of the veterinary nurse in general practice. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Communications and Research SkillsThis module will help the learner develop strategies for lifelong learning regarding veterinary practice. Animal Husbandry & WelfareThis module will introduce the learner to the husbandry of healthy animals and help to develop an understanding of welfare in general terms. Torthaí Foghlama 1. State the importance of good welfare standards in general, relate this to sheep, pigs, cattle and horses, and develop skills in safe handling, restraint, grooming skills and routine veterinary care of these animals. |

Work Placement 1 – PracticalThis module will introduce the learner to the Veterinary practice setting and the role of the Veterinary Nurse in the veterinary practice environment. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Veterinary Nursing 1 – Cardiovascular and Respiratory SystemsThe learner will be introduced to cardiovascular and respiratory anatomy, physiology, disease and treatment and will develop skills and understanding in anaesthetic monitoring. Surgical & Theatre PracticeThe learner will be introduced to the principles of surgical nursing, develop skills in nursing patients and will develop skills as a surgical assistant during aseptic surgery. Professional, Regulatory and Ethical StudiesThe learner will be familiarised with the legal frameworks, ethical theories and regulatory requirements governing the operation of a veterinary practice and their effect on the role as a veterinary nurse. The learner will gain experience on dealing with difficult situations and dilemmas within the veterinary practice. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Interpret the principles of the legislation governing Veterinary practice and the Veterinary Nurse. |

Biological and Bioveterinary ScienceThis module will introduce the learner to the structure and functions of the cell and the main body tissues. Exotic & Wildlife NursingThe learner will be introduced to the husbandry and care of exotic and avian species that are kept as pets. They will develop an understanding of the importance of careful husbandry to prevent disease and will be introduce the care of wildlife. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Veterinary Nursing 2 – Orthopaedics and DermatologyThis module will introduce the learner to knowledge of musculoskeletal, neurological and dermatological structure and function in various species. Veterinary Nursing 3 – Reproductive Endocrine and Immunocompromised PatientsThe learner will be introduced to the anatomy and physiology of the endocrine and reproductive systems. The learner will learn to modify their nursing according to the patient's requirements, paying attention to the particular system under challenge while still nursing in a holistic manner, that is nursing the patient not the condition. Applied Companion Animal BehaviourThe learner participating in this module will learn about the normal behaviour patterns of companion animals and will be introduced to the normal development of the juvenile companion animals. They will develop an understanding of techniques used to train mainstream juvenile companion animals and an introduction into the rehabilitation of rescue companion animals. The learner will have an appreciation of the techniques used to investigate and treat common unwanted behaviours.
