ATU raises awareness against Gender-Based Violence
Throughout the UN 16 days of activism against Gender Based Violence, Atlantic Technological University (ATU) raised awareness of Gender-Based Violence with a series of activities across all nine campuses.
The ATU RESPECT team began the Gender-Based Violence campaign on 25 November, raising an orange flag in solidarity with the “Orange the World” Day and the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Campuses were lit with orange lights, and awareness banners were displayed to highlight ATU’s zero-tolerance stance toward all forms of Gender-Based Violence.
The initiative received widespread support from ATU staff, students, and Students’ Unions, as well as local services including the Gardaí, Rape Crisis Centres, Domestic Violence Services, and the Soroptimists, who joined in the flag-raising ceremony.
Caitríona Gleeson, Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Manager at ATU, remarked, “It is heartening to see across all ATU campuses the extensive visible support and engagement from Staff and Students for ending gender-based violence. With the CSO confirming the epidemic prevalence levels of sexual violence in Ireland, working together to exercise both our civil and public sector duty can really help in preventing and responding effectively to all forms of gender-based violence.”
Throughout the 16 days, over 1,400 individuals engaged in various activities organised by ATU’s RESPECT team. The RESPECT team hosted both online and in-person lectures and panel discussions on topics such as Domestic Violence and Coercive Control, as well as Stalking Awareness, across several campuses.
ATU’s Students’ Unions set up awareness stands, successfully engaging both students and staff in important conversations about Gender-Based Violence.
ATU’s continued efforts to support and raise awareness about Gender-Based Violence demonstrate its unwavering commitment to creating a safer, more inclusive environment for all.
