Tell us a little bit about yourself and what led you to choosing your degree?

I am 28 year old single mum and I left school at the age of 15. I secured myself a well paying job in Lidl which led to an opportunity to grow within the business. After taking time to think about the promotion, I decided that retail wasn’t the direction I wanted to go. I turned down the promotion and decided to go back to education. I applied to, and got accepted onto, Applied Social Care in Sligo College of Further Education. Following my time in Sligo College of Further Education, I secured a place in ATU Sligo to study their BA (Hons) in Social Care Practice with my level 5.

What specifically about your degree in ATU Sligo do you particularly enjoy?

Psychology, Sociology and Social Policy are my favourite modules on this degree. I feel they are real life subjects and give me the knowledge to see and understand the world clearer.

What is the best thing about the degree in ATU Sligo that you think new applicants should know?

It gives you many job and educational opportunities upon graduation.

Can you share some detail of your career outside of your studies?

Since starting in ATU Sligo, I have secured a role working with children and young people in care who have challenging behaviours and learning disabilities. It involves facilitating and implementing a person-centred approach for our service users, to promote and protect the rights of people in a manner that respects their dignity and their privacy, to work positively and constructively with young adults who present with challenging behaviour.

What advice would you give a first-year student starting in ATU Sligo?

Enjoy yourself! It goes by WAY to quick. Give yourself fake deadlines so you are always ahead of yourself and if you need help any way shape or form just ask for it.
