Dietitians are uniquely qualified to translate scientific information on food, health and disease into practical guidance enabling people to make appropriate lifestyle and food choices.
The modules within this course enable the development of scientific knowledge relevant to human nutrition and dietetics, the advancement of analytical and critical thinking and the integration of evidence-based practice. This programme also develops the student’s ability to work and communicate with others in an ethical, flexible, and adaptable manner. Through a unique progression opportunity, this programme allows students to progress to complete a BSc Honours in Dietetics at Coventry University.

Human BiologyThis module will introduce the learner to the fundamentals of human biology including: 1) the characteristics of the major biomolecules; 2) the structure and function of eukaryotic cells; 3) the structure and function of the major tissue types of the human body; and 4) cell division and genetics. Introduction to Human Health and DiseaseThis module aims to introduce students to the science of human health and to discuss the physical and biological factors underlying health and wellbeing. The module will explore the continuum between health and disease and the pathological process associated with common types of disease such as infections, endocrine conditions, neurological imbalances, immune conditions, cancer and genetic disorders. The module will explore the consequence of disease for individuals and populations and introduce broadly epidemiology and its uses in studying human health and disease. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Introduction to DieteticsThis module aims to introduce students to the Dietetic profession, the varied work of the dietitian, and the roles and responsibilities of dietitians. Students will be introduced to the dietitian's standards of professional practice, the professional code of ethics, and evidence-based practice. Students will examine institutional catering systems. The module will provide opportunities for students to develop their interpersonal and communication skills as student dietitians and examine how these apply in a range of practice environments. Introduction to Anatomy & PhysiologyThis module introduces the learner to human anatomy and physiology through the study of tissues. Organs and systems. It will explain how homeostasis is maintained within these body systems. People Centred Communication SkillsThis module supports the student in developing the skills and knowledge needed to build effective and appropriate professional relationships as the basis for a range of therapeutic interventions. The module explores the components essential to understanding communication with individuals and groups of service users and carers to enable effective communication that is ethical and supports therapeutic outcomes. To develop students understanding of professional skills such as communication, empathy and trustworthiness required when working with vulnerable groups and as part of a multi-disciplinary team. The module will support students in developing an understanding of person centered communication and how this will frame the way for individuals to begin to take control of their lives and health. This module aims to support the development of compassionate, caring and professional health care professionals and provide a basis for exploration, reflection and evaluation of personal and professional values. Psychological Well-Being & Health PromotionThis module aims to develop learners' understanding of mental health disorders and examines the main approaches to understanding social, cultural, psychological and biological factors, attitudes to mental health, interventions and supports. The module focuses on enhancing students' local, national and global understanding of public health patterns and the strategies in place to promote health, and protect physical and mental health, as well developing their professional and personal qualities for engaging in such work. Civic & Social EngagementThe module will provide individuals with learning skills that will allow them to undertake meaningful civic engagements. Individuals are required to demonstrate, through submission of the appropriate evidence, that they have been involved in a significant way and for a significant period in extracurricular activities which have enhanced their learning. Human Nutrition & MetabolismThe overall aim of this module is to provide learners with a sound knowledge and understanding of the science of human nutrition, and a basic understanding of the principles underlying human metabolism relevant for the study of dietetics. The role of individual nutrients in the achievement and maintenance of good health will be considered and principles underpinning the development of dietary guidelines and current dietary guidelines for the UK population are explored. The module supports the development of skills that are needed to use food composition tables, dietary analysis software and dietary reference values. Practical workshops will enable students to develop a working knowledge of food portion sizes, recipe modification, nutrient-modified foods and food labelling. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Food & Food ProductionThis module will introduce students to the major categories of food and food products available. Food production and preparation methods will be explored with impacts on nutrient content, food quality and wider issues, such as sustainability, considered. The module will give students an appreciation of the practical considerations of large and small-scale food preparation in a commercial context. Food microbiology will be taught through the delivery of a basic food safety award separately accredited by the Environmental Health Association of Ireland. The innovative delivery of this module will provide the opportunity for students to learn large scale catering, at a specialist catering college and to develop knowledge within student led kitchen laboratory session. Foundations of Evidence Informed PracticeThis module aims to enable students to become independent, evidence informed, life-long learners. It will introduce students to the basic principles of gathering, appraising, interpreting and applying evidence to support their learning and professional development. In addition, study skills will be a feature within the module, helping to support effective academic practice. Health and Wellbeing in the CommunityThis module aims to develop students' knowledge and understanding of the social, politico-economic, cultural and environmental factors that influence individual and community health and well-being. The module will draw upon key International, national and local initiatives to support learning. To achieve this aim, this module will enable students to explore concepts of well-being, disability, disease and illness, health inequality and inequity. In addition, students will examine key health and social care initiatives that will enable them to understand the importance of person-centred approaches to well-being, prevention, care and support. As students' progress through the module, they will develop inter-professional capabilities of communication, role clarification, decision making and team working enabling them to practice and promote healthy conversations about lifestyle. Nutrition, Physiology and Eating BehaviourThe overall aim of this module is to provide learners with a sound knowledge of factors influencing eating behaviour and nutritional status. This module will introduce learners to the normal structure and function of a range of physiological systems and principles of immunology and genetics that underpin the biomedical science pertaining to dietetics. Students will be introduced to the model and process for nutrition and dietetic practice and examine the assessment of nutritional status & nutrient intakes for adults. Torthaí Foghlama 1. Foundations in Dietetic Practice (Including Placement A)This module introduces students to some of the fundamental skills required for effective dietetic practice. Topics addressed fall within the HCPCs competency framework for registered dietitians. The module introduces students to the dietitian's role, skills and attributes in supporting clients to make dietary change. Theories of communication and health behaviour change will be considered and applied to the role of the dietitian in supporting clients making behaviour change. The module aims to develop the communication and professional skills required to work effectively with individuals. The module includes a 2 week practice placement in settings Torthaí Foghlama 1.
